Awful lot of judgement happening here. If the OP is suggesting that any modification to help a bike better fit an individual rider is sacrilege, then I disagree. The beauty of motorcycles and motorcycling is the ability to make the bike your own. Cushier seat? Sure. Bar risers? Why not? More lighting? Unless you want to end up in a ditch, it might be a good idea. You ride your ride, I’ll ride mine and love it. 2016 R1200RT is what I ride and I love it. Top speed? About 130. Am I a safe rider? Yep. (You think safe = slow?)

Why? So you need to look at them before you know what you're using?
It's nice to get a clear picture of the "cockpit" at night at a glance, versus fumbling for what you think you know, where you think you know it is, in the dark, at maybe 75 MPH.

The thing I really want/need besides a more powerful engine is backlighting on the handlebar controls
I would love them. I enjoy riding at night but I am always searching like Helen Keller for the switch that I want. It's a safety issue and an annoyance fiddling around in the dark, especially with gloves on.

I have the switch lighting set to a minimum level and it is acceptable.
But for me there is a difference between a low backlight and a lit Christmas tree as shown in the picture. 😎
As shown is a demonstration as I took the (stock) Ducati Multistrada V4S pictures in my dark garage, no flash. I can show the switch lighting as low or bright as I want, the dash lighting isn't set that bright either when I ride. Please post a picture of your auto's minimum acceptable level and I will attempt to match it.

Then post a picture of your RT switch lighting in the dark with no flash. ;):ROFLMAO:

  1. Adding cockpit lighting for a motorcycle are a safety feature, as well as convenience.
  2. Light dimmers have been in car dash lights for what, 60 years? Add a dimmer, everyone can go bright or stay pitch black.
  3. Lights are a great idea, and BMW should add them. However, considering what LED technology and a spool of wire cost, I would be unhappy if BMW added $1000 to the cost of the 2026 RT/GS, justifying with "additional new safety features.
  4. BMW WOULD bounce the price, if they added dash lighting to their motorcycles. Quite bit more, if they also add an "optional dimmer", 'cause, "BMW". 🙄
  5. Due to #4, most owners would probably prefer the status quo. 😏
YMMV.

Poor you, must be limited to only one or 2 bikes.
A Harley Davidson RoadKing '06, a BMW R100RS '80, a BMW R1250RT '23 and good functioning brain.
But the latter is going backwards. Natural effect of age. 🤣
And the first two barely have any switches.
So if the brain goes further backwards, the RT has to go. Because of the unlit switches.

Apparently its coming...but you have to pay a subscription for it to work :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: Soon we'll have to pay a subscription to start the engine and use the brakes!!

I realize that's a sarcastic reply, but it is also a much repeated and lamented BMW mantra. If a customer thinks there's a common problem that can be remedied, it's either a design feature or it's the customer's fault for "not knowing where the switches are in the dark".

I can agree that although motorcycle switches are getting more numerous and complicated, it is something minor enough that the lack of switch backlighting won't result in anyone selling their bike. :)

I agree with your first two points but considering the last 3 ask: how much did ambient lighting brightness sensors in the current dash, accessory GPS's, and even phones add to models? I really don't know but technology exists and I suspect that it's not $1000... if the Italians can do it...
