how often do you use 6th gear?

I've been searching on this site about the RT power band. I've always liked quieter bikes, so it seems wrong to rev it up, but over the last week or so, i've been keeping revs around 4k and higher to see what kind of difference there would be. I haven't even been using 6th gear unless I'm on the freeway going 80. I'm pretty much in 3rd and 4th gear most of the time now. What gear do you use at 55 or 60 mph? I've been using 4th, that keeps the rpm at 4k. Is this good or bad?

I seldom find myself using 6th gear unless I'm cranking along at 80 mph plus. I'll typically use 5th for normal highway riding and 3-4 on the twisty backroads. Nothing wrong with letting the engine rev and the R/T seems pretty content in the 4-5000 rpm range.

I use 6th most of the time as my commute to work is 90% highway. Most of it is 55 mph and I don't excessively speed - usually hold around 62. Slab riding is boring - no sense wasting gas on it by holding higher RPMs, I'll save that for the twisties! :D

I only use 6th when on the superslab and running consistently over 60 mph. My RT likes to run at the higher revs and I do also!

I have found my RT likes to run down the highway with both the tach and speedo needles at 12 o'clock. Engineers at work.

Flat interstate or other highway that let's me drone along at better than 65. I downshift on hills. Other than that, any gear the let's me stay above 3,500 rpm.

It's not just about the gas.

I've only had my RT for a week and I'm really surprised at the difference in gearing between it and the GSA that I totalled. The RT runs at much lower RPMs than the GSA. My GSA was a 2007 and didn't have the enduro transmission so the dramatic difference in RPMs was unexpected.

The boxer engine likes being over 4000 RPM. On straight country roads that I used to run in 4th or 5th, I find that I'm in 3rd or 4th. I don't bother with 6th until I'm over 65 and usually over 70 on the interstate.

I really can't wait until I have a safe opportunity to wind it out a bit. I don't think the previous owner rode very hard and I suspect it needs its throat cleared. A few dozen miles over 6000 will do it some good.

I tend to run 6th gear at around 3000 rpm + which is usually around 90-100 kmph. I find anything lower the engine seems to labour and is not very happy.

This engine was a big surprise for me, the 6th gear enabled me to have a decent enough speed on the highway without straining the engine while I was running her in.

50-60 MPH 4th gear
60-70/75 MPH 5th Gear

over 75 MPH 6th Gear

I like to keep revs at about 4K. As the bike has more miles (I am about 5200 Miles) 4K now feels right.

Same as Sleuth. 3000-3500 rpm = 55-70mph. 4000rpm= 75mph/120km/h

Spirited riding- I'll hit the rev limiter with a big grin, but for the work commute its 6th asap- even down to 2000prm on a gentle throttle (I did the Accelerator mod for better low-down throttle response).

Unless you are on twisties or passing, its a shame to screw the fuel economy. Im now on 220 to 240 miles per tankfull, but can get 260+ if really careful.

Spirited up to highway speeds to keep her cleaned out then around 3200 in 6th as gas is getting up close to $5.00 a gallon again.

It's not just about the gas.
Yes it is :rotf: I now travel 77/ks to and from work three days a week and enjoy the Great fuel milage.
Here in Ontario the fuel is $1.10.9/liter (Ultra94) when I can find it.
6th gear all the time, unless I am off the super slab...
