The center stand for your year was only manual, no power. The power center stand was added in 2005 and with all the electrical work you would have to do to upgrade to your bike it would be simpler to buy a 2005 than try to change yours.

 

I do believe that folks have retro-fitted electric centerstands to older bikes.
Try communicating with the trike conversion companies to hook you up with an electric centerstand. Or, there is always Beemer Boneyard, forum want ads, or e-bay.

If you can simply swap an electric for a manual it would be an easy task but you would loose the safety aspect of an interlock system. You can add an interlock by having two switches. One to cut the power to the control relay and a second (push button) to supply a ground for the relay coil.

+12V from battery to a on/off switch to 30 on the relay, jump 30 to 86 on the relay, 87 to the CS motor, wire from 85 to a push button switch, other side of push button to ground.

You need to cut the power when not using, it would really suck if the stand deployed while moving.

You might also check the failure rate for the power center stand before making a conversion. There are several threads addressing this. I don't know anyone with an 05 or later with any kind of miles on it that has not had it replaced at least once if not several times.(Hopefully while still under warranty.) They are not especially robust. It's a nice idea but you've probably noticed they are no longer an option with the K1600.

Its more a case of rebuilding, rather than replacing, and this is now pretty well documented. We also found a supplier for the starter motor that drives it, making it less of an issue all round. Its nice to have the EHCS (and its a cool party trick that still sucks 'em in!)

 

I read BMWLT had an article on rebuilding the electric center stand (EHCS). Know where I can find the article? Info on the electric motor supplier? Mine just quit this weekend on a ride through the Smokies.

I just wanted to thank you guys for the very useful and extremely detailed information.

The motor was so cheap that I have ordered two (one for me and one for another k1200lt rider).

You all gave me confidence to take my unit from the bike when it stopped working (2006 k1200lt 26500 miles), take it apart and try to find out why.

The only fault found was corrosion on the earth brush screw in the motor and now I have the unit working perfectly on the bench.

My only final reservation is some fairly heavy corrosion on the exposed actuator rod but as far as I can tell it is not leaking now so will put it back in the bike and hope. Does anyone know of a source for a replacement rod?
Any help would be gratefully received

I would at least clean up the rod with some emery paper to make it as smooth as possible. Will help the seals last. No source yet but I guess I need to get the dimentions and hit my friendly machine shop up for a replacement cost.

 

I have complete lift stand, rear diff with tire and more parts. Just triked out bmw1200lt so i have lots of parts for sale.

 

I really need some info if you would be so kind to help me out. I just purchased a 2005 K1200Lt and the center stand did not work so I removed it and disassembled it and found someone before me had left the spring out that pushes down on the detent ball. I replaced it with a spring that fit in the hole but when I tried it on the bike it would try to lift it but was not quite strong enough . I was just wondering if maybe the spring tension could be the problem since it was full of fluid and didn't have any leaks. I have no idea how I can find out what spring I need. Do you still have your unit ?

 

Will be triking out my '06 and will have the same parts available for sale.

 

What would someone who has a EHCS want for it? It is something i have considered doing for my 01 but I have not done any looking for what it would cost me to get one. I am assuming that a bike with an EHCS also has a side stand. I have no trouble using the standard CS but it might be a nice feature to add depending on cost.

 

Hi Gordon... the later models with EHCS also have the side stand... it's an additional component part of the SS assembly. Easy enough to remove the EHCS unit and still use the sidestand if EHCS needs repair.

You're probably going to find prices all over the shop... my EHCS (2005 model bike) had been repaired several times, then I got lucky and bought a complete box of spare "trike" parts off an '07 for AU$500 with very low miles... I've seen just the EHCS unit itself go for way more. Dropped the new one in and it'll last for a long time now.
If you can get the sidestand/EHCS unit off a low-mile bike then good chance it'll function very well, as long as there's little to no corrosion in the motor.. but that's about the cheapest part to replace anyway. :wave

Sorry just checked my stash and no spring. I can open up one of my rebuilt units and get you a spring free length and post a picture so you can try to find one locally if you want.

 

You will also need to know the gauge of the wire used to make the spring. Try measuring it with a set of Vernier calipers. This is what gives the correct spring tension more so than it's length.
