Steering lock malfunctioned for the 3rd time - this time with the lock engaged. I had visions of trying to load the thing onto a trailer with the steering locked.
It finally came good after an hour. If the problem can't be sorted in a couple of days, I'll have to go on a planned trip (to the Sydney Motorcycle Show) without a steering lock but with comprehensive insurance as a back up.

Intermittent faults are often not easy for dealer fix...

Looking at the parts diagram

I'll bet they ask you to take it in, then they won't find the fault, then you have it back and so on..


How about a disc lock as a backup?

Thanks for the disc lock suggestion and the link to the parts fiche.
My local (250 km round trip) BMW dealer was kind enough to offer to have a look at it between jobs tomorrow, though they said it would be better if I could leave it with them for a couple of days.
I like the electronics on this bike - especially the dynamic ESA, ASC & ABS. I hope the electronic fluff doesn't give more trouble than it's worth..

Ian, some are totally reliable, my 2014 has 10,000 miles on it and the gadgets have been great.

It has needed a new clutch mind you, but apart from that, totally awesome.

 

The steering lock is on the blink again. Sometimes it won't lock but on one occasion it wouldn't unlock. i haven't been able to get it to a dealer while it wasn't working - once because i couldn't unlock the bike to go anywhere. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this intermittent fault, so the best i can do is let my dealer know about it during the warranty period so that if it continues outside warranty I'm covered.
Still no-one else experiencing this problem?

The intermittent steering lock problem lasted about 10 months but has now worked consistently for about 3 months. It came good between services so a software update wasn't the reason. I'm thankful it's now working and also glad I advised my BMW shop of the intermittent fault soon after its first occurred. They made a note on my service record.

I have a keyless ignition 2015 RT LC which has developed an intermittent steering lock fault. The first time this happened it came good after a day or two. Today - for the second time - it has refused to lock, though it does make all the right noises. I have tried giggling the handlebars, putting it on the opposite lock, putting it on the main stand, and of course the high tech solution of turning the ignition on and then off again.
The bike is still under warranty so getting it fixed won't be a problem (apart from the 250km trip to the dealer). But I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

This has happened to me on my 2017 RT when unlocking the steering. It happened several times, then worked okay after that. Anyone else besides the OP have this issue? Anyone addressed this with their dealer?

 

I had it a couple of times, where it was hard to get it to unlock. But only if the front wheel was turned to the right, so I don't do that anymore. It only was twice, so I haven't been able to get anything done about it. Last time was over a year ago.

 

This is a blast from the past. As the OP I continued to have intermittent trouble with the steering lock, though less & less as time went by. As predicted the problem didn't happen when I took the bike in for a service. I have now sold the bike - to a mate as its turns out. He has had it for over a year now and has never mentioned it as a problem. Though like me he might not always use the steering lock. As I said in an earlier post, the steering lock refusing to unlock only happened once but left me stranded like Anthony123. Fortunately it came good before I had to arrange for it to be loaded onto a tow truck.
Anthony123, is your bike under warranty? Even if it isn't there may be a note of this problem on the bike's service record left by a previous owner.
