Cleaning Throttle Body Assembly

I've just gotten the throttle body assembly off in preparation for replacing a faulty breather hose. The thing is really grimy and covered with oil and soot. What is the best stuff to clean this? I could go carb cleaner, but I don't know if that would damage the rubber hoses connected to it. Would brake cleaner do better? I would think that wouldn't damage rubber as it's used on brakes and there's rubber boots on calipers. Also, is it a good idea to change the o-rings on the injectors once I have them out?

I use the Castrol degreaser for all my cleaning. Sodium hydroxide based. Never had it damage rubber but it will eat your skin.

Sounds like some nasty stuff. Sodium hydroxide or lye was actually used to make soap and maybe it still is in some places. It is also used as a drain cleaner.I don't know how it affects plastic, as the TPS is still mounted to the assembly, but I wouldn't think it would, unless it got on the contacts. Is the Castrol stuff available at any auto parts store?

Just don't buy the cheaper "Purple Power" stuff as it does not work worth a ...

I went back to the Castrol and now I gag and choke when I spray it.:)

Oh and it comes in plastic bottle so???

The worse stuff I ever used was grease lightning. That was just about as bad as using oven cleaner when it came to the choke factor. NASTY stuff and it didnt work that well either. I agree Purple power is so weak you could use it for eyewash! I buy the Castrol stuff in the 2.5 gallon refill or in the 1g in a pinch.

Sorry, but I'm not real impressed with this Super Clean stuff. I expected that it would just melt the grease away, but I've applied it a few times, and it still hasn't removed it all. Something that would be foamy and stick on there for a while might be better. I might try the brake cleaner.

Ford used to sell some foaming throttle body cleaner that worked well on Fords, but have yet to try it on a BMW. We used it in conjunction with a bottle brush, and follow up with a rag. I used to buy various sized brushes at the Sun And Fun fly in. Those aircraft vendors have lots of good stuff. (retired Ford tech)

I used CRC Throttle Body Cleaner and on old toothbrush. It worked okay...
I just picked up some of that on the advice of a guy at Advance Auto Parts, and will try that today. I was hoping to get some stuff that would get this off without using a brush or anything, as there's a lot of small areas that are hard to get into with a brush.

Well, so far I found brake cleaner seems to work the best. I would have liked to put the whole assembly in my parts washer, but the TPS needs to stay on there as it is in a fixed position. I had to be careful to avoid that and whatever other electronic module is on there a well, so it turned out to be quite a job. I need to clean around the top of the manifold where this mounts. Fortunately, I was able to find some rubber stoppers at Home Depot that will fill the holes in the manifold while I clean around there.
