Well here goes my first specific post on my 08 research -- today I saw that the the 08 will come with a GPS 'cradle" for the III - but I already own the Zumo and cradle -- so the dealer shld be willing(?) to take off the BMWcradle so I can install my Zumo with XM? Many thnx in advance to this newbie, BTSOOM

See if you can get a model without the cradle since you will have to remove it.

Also where would you mount your Zumo? On the top of the radio or on a shelf above the the instrument cluster (BMR or RCU)

If you remove the factory cradle, you are going to have a hold about .75" where the cradle mounted and the wires passed through. You will also have four holes in a square-ish pattern around the hole through which the screws that hold the mount pass through. You will need to take off left & right tupperware, remove the stingray, and possibly remove the radio box to get it all disassembled. Not hard, but a PITA. Or at least that is what I remember doing with mine.

On the plus side, with her all torn down like that, it's a good time to do a clean install of your electrical farkles.

I bought some plastic hole plugs for the holes, and put an adhesive BMW roundel on the center one. The four corner ones are black, but I have found some rattle can paint that is close to the color of the trim and will paint to match.

That is good info -- indeed sounds like a PITA -- but I can't see buying the BMW GPS box if I'm happy with the Zumo -- many thnx,

Give Raffy a jingle after looking at his web site. He is a member of this forum and sells the BMR products http://motogear4you.com/mcart/index.cgi?code=3&cat=17
If you don't find what you want Raffy can get it for you.
The BMR shelf can be used to also mount your radar detector, Satellite radio, GPS antenna, cell phone, etc... using the right mounts.

The zumo cradle will attach to the bmw mount on the stingray if it is already there. Then there will be no hiding the the holes. Have had mine there for about 12000 miles with no problems.

You are absolutely correct. I took the factory mount off and moved the GPS and other unmentionable farkles up to the CoPilot shelf so they are closer to my line of sight, and the thread originator wrote about considering the BMR CoPilot Shelf.

Remember from the MSF Basic, where you look is where the bike goes.

Just my $0.02.

I like the satellite radio mounted on the stingray (easy to reach for frequent station changes). If the factory gps mount is a standard "amps" hole pattern (I suspect it is) most sat radio unit will mount perfectly. I made my own bracket.

I mounted my Zumo on the BMR shelf. Having it mounted higher, I find it easier to glance at while looking down the road. The shelf also solves the dash-light glare off the windshield at night.
