XM Radio Reception Issue Appears Resolved

Instead of adding on to multiple threads commenting on XM radio issues on the 2021 - 2022 RT models I decided to start a new one. Moderators can combine if they wish.

During my 12,000 miles service on a 2022 RT my dealer, Moon Motorsports in Monticello, MN installed a new receiver puck BMW requested they order to resolve my issues of broken XM reception. The puck replaced the one that came on a bike that was assembled in late January 2022.

In the nearly 100 miles of riding after picking up the bike I only lost service twice, once pulling in to my garage and other time stopped at a traffic light on the north side of a tall building (as I would expect) otherwise it worked perfect and as good as the receiver I had installed on the top box until BMW could resolve the issue.

The BMW part number of the new puck is 65 21 8 521 436.

Richard I have not heard from my dealer on the AM antenna. I’ll call them tomorrow and see if they have any news. This week is the last week in MN where we can ride in reasonable comfort as below freezing for a high in the next few days. So may not get it installed before spring.
Darrel who is your dealer. I’d like to get my dealer on this issue to fix my am radio on my 21 R1250RT

My local dealer here is Tom Woods and I understand they have a dealership in MN so I was hoping they could share some info

The part number of the replacement would be helpful.

Antenna for AM radio the dealer received today is called a foil antenna part # 65218406329.

If we get a 40 degree day again and the roads are still not salted I’ll ride up the 55 miles and have installed. One hour estimate was given on the installation If not feasible to ride the dealer will pick up my motorcycle with their enclosed trailer so they can attempt to resolve this warranty item.

Thanks for looking. That's the same part number as the one on my bike (that doesn't work). If yours works - maybe they have some defective ones. That's pretty funny about the one hour estimate. I took mine out in about four minutes! It's removal of one piece of Tupperware and snipping the tie-wraps to get it out. Reverse should be about two minutes.

Now testing it via the TFT - that might actually take fifty four minutes! :p

My RT has been winterized - I'll get all 3 antenna's replaced in the Spring at this point... lol
Does anyone know the PuMA # (BMW's internal case# used for dealer's reference) for the SXM antenna issue & solution on the 2021+ RTs? It would be easier to get my dealer to agree on the antenna replacement if I show them the BMW's PuMA # (which confirms the issue)

I’m not sure what the PuMA# is but my XM antenna was replaced on 10/14/22. The maintenance repair order refers to BMW TSARA case 2002635. Maybe this will help you. I think someplace earlier in this thread I listed and maybe provided a photo for the replacement antenna which is the same as used on the K1600 series from 2013. This replacement antenna fits in the mushroom once the current no functioning antenna is removed.

TSARA replaced PuMA. Consider TSARA as being PuMA 2.0... lol

I just bought this used antenna off of eBay for $40.00 plus free shipping. If it doesn't improve my XM reception I won't feel too bad, and nothing like having wasted $180 for a brand new one from BMW. Sure hope it works better.
This is the one they put on my bike, so far no-more (No Signal) showing up on the TFT. I haven't had any issues with it at all. The picture is the mushroom on its side and the BMW replacement.

Here's the replacement parts numbers from the dealer paperwork (why there's two, I'm not sure)???

My local dealership is scheduled to swap out my sat antenna with the new disc shaped one under the triangular shroud next week. I hope that resolves the sat reception issue when I raise the windscreen. If not I'll keep using the puck antenna I mounted to the top trunk as that one is rock solid, never loses the signal.

Steve
New disc antenna was installed last fall on my 2022 R1250RT by the dealership and I'm happy to report that my XM radio antenna issues have been resolved. It works fine now windshield up or down and whether I'm in town or out in the middle of nowhere. Still wish I could get much more volume out of the radio before the distortion comes in whether using FM or XM Satellite as the source. Apparently BMW makes their radios so they sound great when the bike is not moving and the engine isn't running. Needs twice as much peaker volume when running at highway speeds. I don't currently use a helmet comm. system but if I had a helmet on and wasn't using such a system, I wouldn't even know the radio was on at cruising speed. It goes plenty loud but anyrhibg oast 50% volune is just distortion. Needs to have twice the volume without the distortion for it to be audible when running at highway speeds without a helmet on.

Took my '21 BMW R1250 RT into the dealer about 5 weeks ago to have the radio reception issues address. Mind you AM, FM and XM reception were terrible or in the case of AM, non-existent.

About a week later the service manager calls and confirms that parts are on order but they'll be coming from Germany, so sit tight as it could be a few weeks. 2 weeks later, he confirms that parts have arrived and that the bike is being put into the service queue to replace the antennas.

Today I get an update that the tech worked on the bike yesterday and he reported that both XM and FM reception were now significantly improved. However, AM still was not working. To test the AM port and radio functionality, he tried attaching the AM antenna directly to the radio, rather than the wiring harness. It worked. They are now revising the case with BMW to see what the next step is as it could very well be a wiring harness issue.

Lovely.

Nice on the XM and FM. Hope the AM gets resolved. I still have never tried the AM on my 2022 R1250RT. The FM reception and sound are great as long as I don't venture more than 10 miles from home/suburbia. After that, almost no reception on any FM station. As mentioned in another post, the dealership replacing my XM antenna with a newer disc shaped antenna solved my XM reception issues even with the windscreen all the way up. 😀
