Where and how to mount a phone R1250RT 2021

18394 Views 62 Replies 29 Participants Last post by  wspollack
With the frustrations over the TFT and the mapping, I have been trying unsuccessfully to mount my phone so I can follow the Tourstart navigation on it.

with the SOS button there does not seem enough room on the bars, and the wonderful Quadlock system, which fits in the fork stem does not fit the new 1250RT (I bought one, and it doesn't. )

There is a prefect bit of real estate right above the screen, but no easy way to fix it in place. (Gaffa tape would look obscene on this beauty)

Can anyone point me to a solution I can get in the UK that works please?

Looking at RAM mounts, but I have no experience of what works.

For me, the best place for a phone is on my desk at home. The worst place is on the handlebars in front of my face.

Ian, et al.:

You folks who leave (or would like to leave) mounts in place that are attached with RAM socket arms might want to consider the locking RAM products, e.g.:

I used to leave a phone mount in place most of the time on earlier bikes, and used the latter locking knob as part of my setup.

Right, I hear you: nope, this won't eliminate the possible theft of the mount, or of the entire bike, and so forth. What it will do, IMO, is make life a little more secure when you stop for lunch, that sort of thing. It eliminates what's often referred to as "an attractive nuisance," i.e., some passerby coming along and simply twirling the standard (non-lockable) knob that comes with a RAM socket arm, and lifting off the mount and socket arm.

I mention these, in case some of you were unaware of these relatively uncommon RAM products. If you don't like the idea, or think it's foolish, fine, okay by me -- just a suggestion.

I ordered the clutch perch clamp off a GSA to replace the RT one ...then I screwed a 10x1.5 thread RAM Ball into the mirror mount on it - VERY CLEAN INSTALL.
Can do the same on the right side...

Be aware that the clutch side has two versions - one has the screw hole to hold on the switch for the driving lights (in USA anyway - unsure in other markets)

The R1250RT comes in only 1 configuration in my country, fully loaded, except for SOS, and the phone wireless charger for some reason (which I believe is basic in other countries)

Do you have any idea if the clamp will fit on the brake side (marked in the photo below)?

Can you please help me get this clamp, as it should be exact match for my situation.?

Yes the proper clamp off of a 2016 R1200 GSA WILL FIT THERE but I don't have the order paperwork to get you the part number.

I found this thread really useful whilst waiting to collect my new 2021 RT. Just thought I’d share my own initial solution in the hopes that I can help someone else down the line.

The Helix Locking Strap from Ultimate Addons will thread nicely around the bars in front of the clutch or brake reservoir and secures snugly.

Thanks for this. I'm picking up my 2021 RT from London next week. I'm a bit worried about the TFT/Nav after everything I've seen online and want a back-up plan. This looks just the business. I'd actually prefer to use it with my TomTom 550 which is what I currently use. They do have a case/holder for TomTom but I'm wondering if it would be too heavy for the Helix/ratchet and maybe on;y a solution for phones? I've emailed Ultimate Add-Ons to see what they think.

Cheers

P.S. I can find my way home to Aberdeen without nav, it's getting out of London on a new bike that's worrying me! :ROFLMAO:

Dont worry too much about it now..... make sure its all working before you leave the stealer, and it has the latest software, and you should be OK. So it should connect, play music (If headphones connected, thats good for sat nav voice directions too) and not turn off because the phone shuts down. Its worth planning how you charge the phone, If you don't have q charging, I use this instead of a cable

I went for the Rubber cheap option, and its perfect. Sits on the bike and never use it now, as the software is working without fault since December for me.
Its the one near the beginning of the thread, rec by boulderGT3. Not lost my phone yet. Actually not really needed it much, never now.

Most solutions here are from kind folks who have the older RT, you will love your new bike. hope its not too cold, but on this, you will be fine!!

thanks so much for this! I think I’ll order the rubber gizmo as a back up plan. I have the basic Cardo Freedom (solo) that connects and works perfectly with my TomTom so hopefully will work ok with phone/bike. I saw on YouTube you have to connect the cardo to the bike before the phone - but as you say, hopefully the dealer will help set it up for me before I leave. Once I’m on the M6 I’ll be fine anyway :) I don’t use my Cardo for music or calls, just nav. Thanks again.

The Ultimate Addons was a good temporary solution, but I was disappointed with the quality of their stuff. All of the connectors seem very weak & flimsy.

Like a lot of people on this forum, I opted for the Ilium bar risers… Great kit with the added advantage that accessories can be fitted.

I mount my sat nav using a mount from Telferizer that goes where the BMW emblem is on the bars. It is suitable for RAM mounts so you could probably source a suitable holder for your phone.

How did you remove the BMW emblem?

It just pops off, use a blade to get under the lip.

Thanks for posting this - worked great for me ('22 RT). Quadlock w/charger and dampener on left side, and radar detector on the right.

Thank you.....alas on the 2022 Rt 1250 I can't fit the quadlock form stem mount as under the BMW badge there isn't much room :(
