If you could have the perfect gadget, maybe one that combined or supplements what you already have, what would it be? Presume the average use is touring.

Would you put all of your gadgets into one thing?

What features would make you want one?

What would be your priorities and requirements?

Answers to these questions are the start of something big. Thank you.

I would like to see Garmin build a all in one unit that could be used and powered from any bike that would provide the following:

FM radio
Intercom
GPS w/ large screen able to be viewed in bright daylight
Cell phone
Ipod
Radar detector
Built in CB and FRS

All of these would have automatic volume control and priority settings for interupts.

This would also be high quality stereo and bluetooth connected.

Ok I can dream, but if anyone could do it, it would be Garmin.

As one who lives where we have LOTS or roads intertwining like spider webs, Elevations from sea level to 10K + in a days ride, Bike with an inaccurate speedo, along with what once was a bunch of loose maps or a map book ...... My personal "Perfect" touring farkle would be the GPS unit.

NOT Garmin please.... They are already an obscenely expensive quasi-monopoly and do not provide much in terms of programming and customizing layer. Great devices, not so great software...

Here is what I would like (and I have much of it either done or underway):

1) BMW to create actual customizing ports built-in. Pre-wiring, ports for hardware, little bit of space under fairing, etc, so it does not look like some monstrous hybrid by the time the assembly is done. In particular, built in spots of satellite reception, for radar detector probes, etc...

2) No radio, no CD, no tape. Those are all so 20th century..

3) Everything wireless, using wifi and bluetooth (wifi is preferable to BT wherever possible if there is enough power, provides more range and more bandwidth throughput)

4) Capabilities:
- GPS: No Garmin. I want a device running Streets and Trips 2010 with their GPS. Ideally that would be through a small LCD screen that would mount flush on the dashboard, or even better the future dashboards will be small LCD screens with ability to customize what is shown.
- Spot (Spot needs to license its technology/service to be used on other hardware, or to build a better device; space is at a premium and having a device solely for alert is a luxury; makes no sense to have 2 GPS receivers, should be part of the same device or app.
- Zune HD integration
- Mobile phone integration
- Sirius or XM integration
Note I am saying integration, not all in one. I need to be able to move my stuff around.

5) Bike to bike and driver to passenger in wireless (I don't use but there is a huge demand)

6) Wireless headset/microphone

7) controls on the handlebars

8) charging instrumentation in the top bag

Work on this one: A force field that would force all mobile phone to disconnect when I'm within 50 feet. And as a option: The same force field would relocate all mascara tubes to the back seat.

good start, but mine would be a *cager away*... where those that would venture into your SPACE, would be catapulted to another dimension..car and trucks as well.... :D

... well what makes you think ONE mfg would put out a product with such a plethoria of functionality and value...
that would cost what BMW charges for a service... :D

A device that can be transferred from bike to bike with minimal effort and contains:

XM radio or Pandora
GPS with touch screen and voice commands
Bike to bike communication, FRS or GMRS with PTT
Radar detector including device that identifies speed traps on GPS (one can dream!)
Cell phone capability
iPod
Wireless headset and mic
Charging capability for above gadgets

All packaged in one unit, compact and waterproof. Did I leave anything out? Oh, yeah, and all for less than $100. Yeah, right!

You guys are great.

I am surprised no one said live, real time weather. How about something like OnStar meets Lo-Jack? Or the ability to use your cell phone to lock/unlock/start/locate the bike?

How about all of this, plus whatever comes next, plus internet updatability, PLUS the added safety of total voice control or handlebar integration.

And, mostly, it would just work.

It would be cool, if in addition to GPS, add the "Weather" option... AND, a LEO locator ... for safety reasons, of course... somewhere there is a tie into the "system"

all the above, of course would be kewl... oh.. and a way to play a different song to each headset...

Push to talk for bike to bike... and an option for PTT between rider/passenger

Ability to operate the device "off bike" for downloading songs... or Bluetooth so that it can download from PC to device...(if BT, that's one less place for leaks to the system)

Radar detector...a nice addition to LEO locator..

"Emergency locator"... energizes at a "collision" and "calls home" for help with latest GPS coordinates.

Tie this into the "emergency flight" ambulance many folks now are members of....

Provide an "overspeed" warning from GPS (controllable) so you can set a 0-5-10-! speed warning.. so you can have gentle "reminders" ...

XM and Sirius and Pandora and (whatever's next)

BT tie into telephone...

IPOD and other MP3 players

Thank you all. Keep it coming; I'm taking notes.

BTW: nothing, so far, is a surprise to me - including the cage eradicator feature.

How about forward looking infrared (FLIR) to see hot things standing by the road at night (deer, cars with lights off).

One question though; many would scoff at such connectivity because it could be seen as unsafe distractions. How could such a device be built to satisfy you that it actually enhances safety instead of distracting you?

Another question: At what size is a screen too small or too big? 5, 7, 8.4, or 10 inches?

An Iphone comes darn close to the ideal wish list.

GPS
Phone
3G,WiFi,Bluetooth
Pandora
Touch Screen Interface

-- No radar detector - yet.

Has anybody heard of "Heads Up Display" with functions for all of the above. If its good enough for the Raptor it should be good enough for the BMW line of low flyers.

Not an iphone. For one thing, I really don't like the thing (I want my phone to work as a phone before it attempts to turn itself into a gadget) but more importantly the network is not ubiquitous. Anything solely cellular based will be limited in use for me.

Heads up display would be cool, if it can work reliably. But I don't mind an LCD screen (probably about 8 to 10" would be ideal, but as mentioned before integrated into the bike rather than protuding and not waterproof).

Infrared or other technology to diagnose obstacles would be great. Include things such as traffic analyzer (distance and speed of car ahead, and most importantly behind me - very useful when stopped at red light - would definitely pay to have a "get out of the way" warning if a car behind me is not braking in time).

LEO mapping is a winner :p

I don't need an all in one but more importantly an easy reliable integrator of things I like to use such as cell phone, Zune, Sirius, Garmin, etc. plus some great new features.
