What did you do to your RT today?

145681 Views 1320 Replies 153 Participants Last post by  tag2501
Working on the RT is a little bit of therapy and a break from my daily work routine.
Spent a couple of hours this afternoon replacing the RH cylinder head cover and detailing the bike for a weekend ride. Last week I completed the 100,000KM service, including the valve and ignition timing checks (thanks Boxflyer for your assistance).
Hopefully it stays dry this weekend..

Just took my 2021 R1250 RT in to the shop for a half-dozen warranty/recall issues mostly having to do with radio reception. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes to get BMW to agree to replace the AM, FM and XM antennas - get them to the dealer and have the deal do the work.

I've taken videos so they can't say "how did you diagnose this?" over and over.
Follow the threads on this, prime them with "people have had issues, here is an example you can reference "BMW TSARA case 2002635"...(unsure if they can) and on a saturday...my dealer had a call to US warehouse and a new XM antennae installed when they opened Tuesday.

I was polite, let them know that -everyone- is having this issue, it's pretty hot on the internet, and the replacement ant fixes it right up.

According to the service manager there are TSARA cases out there for XM and AM antennas. Until I showed him the video, they didn't believe the FM issue as there was no previously reported issues.

"no previously reported issues."

Boilerplate reply. HE has had no reported issues.

I didn't want to go through the BS of dealing with BMW. The first thing I did, with my 2021 RT was mount the correct antenna on top of the master brake cylinder and was done with it in 30 minutes. Reception is perfect. And who the hell listens to AM and FM anyway :) ....................

Thought I would do a little radiator fin cleaning today. Rather than just the usual soap and water, I used a Simple Green solution. I was a little shocked at the actual state of the fins, with the condition of the captured rinse water.
Will put it all back together tomorrow, nice and clean.

The 30K maintenance: Well all the work got done oil and filter changed, new air filter, new spark plugs, rear end oil. Checking the valve lash was a waste of time all of the valve were in spec. But the spark plugs ............................. I don't know how this bike was running without missing. One was gapped at .050 the other the electrode was just about gone and gapped at .080. Also when I went to take them out they didn't feel like they were ever torqued to the right spec because there was just about no tug required to loosen them. I used the 911 to reset the throttle bodies and twist grip now the 4K slight vibration that I had is gone. I think I'll be changing spark plugs at 15K now ...........................

Looks good! What was your cleaning process? How did you capture the dirty water? 🤔

That's a bit concerning. Mine were in good shape when I changed them at 20,000km. Did BMW make the interval longer to 30,000km now? I'm pretty sure my 2019 states to do them every 20,000km.

I didn't realize the 911 could reset the throttle bodies and twist grip. How often do you do this?

Now THERE'S a man who loves his bike, inside and out. Never thought about cleaning the radiator fins. Just ... never occurred to me, lol. 👍🍻🏆

I just installed one. They're made much better that the OEM. The rubber seal of the K&N much higher quality not flimsy like the OEM. I like it.................. I've always used K&N products in all my vehicles.

Well 20,000km is only 18,000 miles. I had 30,000 miles on those plugs. and I intend to change them out every 12,000 miles now seeing what I saw .......................

BMW's service spec directs new plugs for the 12K mile (20K) service, so I suppose you were a bit overdue. See attached. I'm thinking that I'll be checking plugs for every 6K mile service, too. Not that difficult to pull them and check.

20,000 km is actually 12,427 miles - and those plugs look pretty poor in relation to my plugs, pulled (on spec) after 12,000 miles. (Both almost identical.)

Your ground electrode looks like it's been building quite a crust. Fuel issue?

Would the R&G radiator guards be beneficial in keeping the radiators clean. It seems like airflow to the radiators would be reduced if guards were installed.

Wouldnt touch it.

Never met a vehicle with a K&N, that didnt also have a dusty intake track...

There's a reason that they "flow more" with only 20% of the OE filter surface area.

Nothing against guards and several members use them. This was more gunk than stones or bugs.
The bike as 107,000km and the last time I cleaned the fins it was just a basic wash, so I was trying something different just because I had the time and had seen the product online.

Pulled the front fairings off and removed the fan. Sprayed the radiators with Simple Green and allowed it to soak for 4 mins. Washed the fins with clean water from the hose at just house pressure. Captured the water in a bucket as it filtered through the radiator core to see if this product actually did anything..
Repeated the process twice until the water was clear.. (y)
