What Did You Do To Your LT Today

Just thought I would start a sticky to just see what is happening in the LT world.

Jean and I got out for a breakfast run and two hour ride in the Tennessee hills above Alabama. This is the first time we have been out since before my surgery on the left thumb July 13th. It felt really good to get out and ride again on the LT.

A couple of small things over the past year:

1. External SAE port for battery trickle charger, heated gear, and as an extra charging port while riding and camping.

Got my 2002 K1200 running today after alarm delete last fall. I have no lights when its running, but most come on when the key is in on position, but engine is off. Would love to get the old girl running again. I've neglected her for a while.

I did the entire removal of the alarm system as some by Kirk at Illinois BMW Riders.

Unless it was doing that before you removed the alarm, I suspect you've just got some wires in the wrong circuit due to the removal of the alarm. I'm just guessing, of course.

Alarm delete does not involve any wiring to the lights. Could be traced to the load shed relay, key on, no start, lights will be on. Lights go off during cranking then come back on after the engine is started.

Yesterday I finished the alarm bypass and delete. I followed the instructions in Kirk's video, but my system was different than what he posted. My bike is a 2002 and the connectors didn't match the 2005 or later example he had in the video or the photo of the 2000 model he also had in the video. Thanks to John's link in another thread I got the correct wiring setup and got it fixed.

I also did the canisterectomy since had all the plastic off of the bike. I even followed the vacuum hose from the canister all the way up to the engine and removed it there and plugged it with a honest to goodness real vacuum line plug!!

I will be putting it all back together this evening. Gotta love all that plastic !!!

All I did today was take a little ride to meet with Jim (Jriverside) to pick up a few things and talk BMWs!
Great to meet him! And, a perfect day to ride!
Finally glorious sunshine in southern California! Cheers, All!

G'day everyone. I bought an 08LT last fall and have been working on it since the new year. I have to say that I'm quite happy I took the time to go through and learn about this bike. The previous owner(s) unfortunately let the old girl go a bit. She needed some TLC. The following is a list of things I either fixed or purchased to use or work on her.

Can't wait for the snow to melt and the slat is washed off the roads. I think the big girl will be fun to play with.

front fork seals
Replaced fork oil
final drive oil seal + labor
transmission output shaft oil seal
lubed shaft splines
new rear brake rotor
new rear brake pads
new front brake pads
remove ABS pump
New stainless steel brake lines
removed radio
new hand grips
changed transmission oil
changed final drive oil
changed engine oil and filter
cleaned and lube shift linkage
fixed front fairing side lights
air filter
Ebay torque poster
bestem bag liners
fasteners Motoplex
changed spark plugs
Valve clearance check
mirror mount mod
Centerstand hyd pump rebuild

That's quite a list. I have done a few of those myself. You will enjoy this bike, smooth as silk.

You're going to hate me, but I have to say it. Why oh why did you put that charge port right there in the middle of the left plastic cover. It's like planting a wart on Elle Macpherson's cheek. The LT has three standard 12 volt outlets any of which can be used for connecting a charger. All you need is to buy the male plug that goes into those ports and splice it onto your charger cable. I realize that not all models had the ports installed but you could have fitted that port at the standard location and avoided what I think is a visual mistake. I do apologize for my harsh comment. I do realize that everyone, makes the choices they are happy with but I couldn't keep my fat mouth shut. All power to you my friend.

I just looked at your picture again and you do have the 12volt outlet right next to your reverse control. I use that same outlet to trickle charge my bike, works a charm.

I think that 12 volt outlet is difficult to see while riding, plus I can't see it from my house anyway! ;)
Well, got a list of stuff I have done to my bike in the last few days.

First off, I had to correct another mistake that taught me a valuable lesson. While I was doing the canisterectomy and the and the alarm delete I decided to shed any other weight I could. I had already deleted my ABS system and went back to old school brakes so anything that was left pertaining to the ABS system was good to rip off the bike, right? Wrong! While I had the plastic off the back I decided to clip off the ABS pulse generator to the front and back brakes. You guessed it, the next time I rode my bike....no speedometer !!! Yikes! I knew within 5 seconds what caused my speedometer to quit working, that dang pulse generator wire that is also used by the ABS system. And the bad part is, I clipped the wire off right at the sensor, there was not way to splice the wires back together. Thankfully I had my parts bike so I robbed the ABS sensor/pulse generator off of it and put it on my bike. The speedometer works once again!!! I now know where the speedometer gets its information from...

The next thing I fixed was my seat hydraulic lift arm that holds up the seat so you don't have to. I would have to hold my seat up with one hand while I worked on whatever under the seat. I would prop my seat with something while I worked and that was a pain in the butt. Tonight, after having my parts bike for almost 2 years, the thought occurred to me that I have another hydraulic arm sitting on my parts bike!! I swapped the arms and now I don't have to hold up my seat anymore !!

I also added some new Auxbeam LED driving lights and replaced my old stock halogen driving lights and they made a big difference. Not a bad investment for $99.

I also drained and replaced the oil in the final drive. The last time I did so was 10k miles ago. I think the oil still looked good and the magnet had a fine sludge on it. No large shavings at all, just the fine powdered sludge that is expected so I am thinking my final drive is still doing well.

The next couple of days will have me putting on new tires and brake pads front and rear and I plan on flushing the transmission and replacing the oil in it as well. I have a short 4 day road trip planned for the end of next week and I'm trying to get her road ready for the new season.

Vice grips mean something has gone very, very wrong. I used to hide them when my dad looked in on my work. He has been passed for 20 years and I still fear his wrath when I use them.

But sometimes, they're the only way to put something right 😁

They have their uses. I used a set of them today to help reform mounting points in a light curtain system on a machine. Often a tool of last resort.

No problem. Good points. Most of my heated gear has SAE connectors. Sure I could buy all the 12V extra cables and plug in near my left foot or behind me on the passenger backrest (I only have two 12V ports), but right below my left leg seemed easiest. Also, nice and convenient to plug in my charger. My wife uses the backrest 12V port for her heated gear when we ride, so that leaves me with dangling cords down by my shifting foot.

I appreciate the reference to Elle Macpherson (blonde), but I'm more of a Cindy Crawford (Brunette) kind of guy...even with her beauty mark.

Fuel pump repair completed, put the tank on, connected the hoses and plugs, turned the key a few times to let the fuel pump cycle and pressurize the lines, and then cranked...and it fired up!!

Just need to get another short u-bent piece of fuel hose (for right off the pump flange) and then I can reassemble everything.
