Hello

We are planning a trip to West Virginia later this summer. Thought about staying around the Beckley or Summersville area. Want to rent a cabin for home base and have a few shorter day trips when we get there. Looking for suggestions on places to stay eat and drive to when we get there.

Thank-you for any help

We had a similar trip to that area last year, I think you will find it to be a great place to be on a motorcycle!! We stayed over near Dunmore (on WV 28) in a little campground that had some motel rooms and a couple of cabins, it was nice! a very quiet area (partly because of the Green Bank observatory) we found the roads to be in good condition and not too busy with traffic, in general unless you are near a town the size Beckley you will find that corporate America is conspicious in it's absence, we found great momma poppa restaraunts, hotels, and other businesses to supply our needs. All of the area on the east side of WV along the mountain ridges is perfect motorcycle riding places to visit might include the Green Bank Observatory, Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Cass Scenic Railway, The New River Gorge, check out the Greenbrier Resort (very exclusive neighborhood), if you are a golfer there are some of the nations top rated courses in WV and if you are not a golfer you can watch and wonder at others who play there, the courses are just beautiful.

For us just being in the mountains and on the winding roads is a vacation in itself, a word of caution though, wildlife is plentiful here especially around sundown pay attention and ride carefully!! Have a great time and unless I miss my guess you will enjoy the ride immensely!

I can only add that I stayed in Cass last year and it was one of the best riding trips I had. The only thing you must watch is gravel. While the turns, switch backs, and grades are a bikers dream, the trucks running those roads throw a lot of shoulder gravel onto the roads. Be careful of that by all means. New River Gorge Bridge is a nice visit. The train ride in Cass it worth it to do once and the view from the summit is one to behold. All in all good stuff. Was a bit hard to find good gas as Mom and Pops were having trouble financially to get and keep gas. The Observatory is also a nice stop and when you see that dish you are in for a treat.

Have fun and be safe.

Brian,

My family is from Summersville. There are a lot of nice places to rent around the Summersville Lake area, from one end of the $$$ spectrum to the other. Do some internet research on whitewater rafting on the New and Gauley rivers to find some really nice places to stay or eat.

How many days are you planning to spend there? There are plenty of scenic rides that would work well originating from Summersville. A stay in Beckley would put you closer to the Blue Ridge Pkwy by 45 minutes or so.

We are planning on being in the area 5 days or so. So far it sounds like a good destination.

Hi Brian: I highly recommend riding RT. 33 - beautiful road for a bike. On there you will also find Seneca Rocks - great tourist activities there.
