Something probably stuck to it and burned off.

I pulled into the garage once and the bike was smoking - only had a few miles on it... a big leaf made it's way to the pipe and was smoldering... lol... taken out by a leaf, go figure...

Hope you got the big leaf off.

LOL.. yes, it was smoldering and lots of smoke but I got it off and didn't burn down the house in the process.
