2000 K1200LT, 74,000 miles. My first time checking, PO had it done 25K ago. So.. all the intakes are tight.. all the exhaust are loose!

Intake tight meaning, some will take a 4/1000 (.101mm) feeler gauge, some will take a 5/1000 (.127mm) feeler gauge.

Exhaust loose meaning, they will all take a 12/1000 (.305mm).

Hear are my thoughts.. The intake shims need to be loosened by 1 shim size (.05mm). The exhaust can be tightened by 1 shim size (.05mm). So I just swap intake and exhaust shim cam followers! Net result is the exhaust get tighter and the intakes get looser.

Anyone see the same wear over time (intake valves tighten/exhaust valves loosen)?

I don't think this will work. The only way it would is if all intake shims are the same and all exhaust are the same but just the right thickness to do a switch. Usually they are different sizes, especially after a number of miles, and possibly, some being changed earlier. I have 96k on mine and so far have only had to make a change on 1 valve. I would check each shim for size and maybe you could switch a few. Sometimes dealers or other riders will trade with you if they have a few they can use.

Rodger that. I could have been more clear. Most of the exhaust are 2.90mm. Most of the intakes are 2.95mm. I have all the current sizes documented, I may need a few to get things correct but think every shim will find a new valve to push on.

Many people swap them around to minimize the number you have to buy, trade, kill for. Sounds like you got this covered.

Hi , If 2.90 intake is tight , you need more space between the cam and the valve so you need 2.85 or smaller . If 2.95 exhaust is loose , there must be some carbon built up under the valve seat, or ? . Sometimes stuff will get between the valve and the seat. Like if you take the spark plugs out to make it easier to turn the motor over, stuff flakes off and gets stuck there ...I have found that out myself the hard way :surprise:

I havent, doesnt sound right to me at all, I dont like to question your checking methods but I do or the other person who did them the first time got it all wrong.

I wouldn’t change those exhaust shims, they are still in spec, and on the loose end of the spec. That’s the best place to be. Your intake shims definitely need changed. I’ve never known K12 valves to get looser, only tighter.

Patric is right. I wasn't thinking but you will need a smaller/thinner bucket for your intake and you can't use the thicker exhaust buckets anywhere else so I would leave them alone as they are still in spec at the high end of the range. Here is my chart as a reference for those that may not have done this before. My initial was all but one good so I left them alone as it wasn't screamingly tight. Second go round after some high RPM riding for a couple years but not extended mileage and I am tight on several and had to buy 4. Exhaust held their own so again, untouched.

Nice chart Gordon! I'll be copying the format. I have my notes but will need to up my game! Here's what is currently installed. I trust my numbers, the bike has not been run in a month, I turned the motor over multiple times and remeasured, I was surprised to find all the intakes on the tight side and all the exhaust on the loose side. That's why I started this thread. Safe travels everyone.

OK, played with the sheet based on what you provided and you are not too bad off. You will need to buy/trade steal a few to get yourself back into spec but the exhaust will be at the tight end and also any of the intake that are on the tighter of your measurements. You may already have a plan but it was a good exercise for me to do for my next round. Here is what I found and you can swap the numbers based on your actual intake measurements and see if I came up with what you have. Hopefully I didn't mess it up. I did the intake 1 and intake 2 and buy 1 and 2 based on all tightest or all loosest measurement. 1 is all tightest, 2 is loosest since I didn't have the individual intake measurements.
