Spent my Labor day laboring over my LT. I am glad to say, I am running out of things to check and update. Today I did my first valve check with a replacement of the Bosch plugs I bought 4 years ago to NGK Iridium with new NGK wires from EME. I was generally pleased with the results. My feeler gauges had .127, .152 and .178 for intake and .254 for exhaust.

Intake Valve clearances.
A .152 B .127
A .178 B .178
A .178 B .178
A .178 B .152
Exhaust Valve Clearances
A .254 B .254
A .254 B .254
A .254 B .254
A .254 B .254


My B cyl 1 intake was a little close. Looking for a consensus. The feeler gauges are 5 and 6 thousandths or .127 and .152mm. How many of you would yank the camshafts out and swap a single bucket for less than a thousandth of an inch? I am thinking for an intake valve, I am not so bad off and it can wait a little while till winter maybe. This is my baseline though as it is the first time I have done the measurements. The Bosch plugs looked really good so I feel the engine is fairly sound at present.

Well, you could wait,...BUT.. you have it apart now & putting the bucket in now would only take an hour or two. :wink:

I would do it now,.. but in the end it is up to you...:grin:

It is already back together and I have no idea what bucket i need yet. Plus, I didn't want to leave it in the middle of my garage not rideable as it is just now getting to where the weather is more agreeable to ride. I did want to know how bad or good they were to plan work hopefully during the off season. It isn't all that much work to get to that point again, I just don't know if it is all that critical yet for the intake Plus, I don't have the correct gauge but .152 is probably close enough to .15 to say it is just on the edge of being in spec.

I will count that as a vote for doing it now rather than waiting. ;)

Your valves are much more unifier than mine have ever been. You have to make the call, but I changed mine when several were at the limit, not even below it.

The main reason is I like to have some margin in case life gets in the way and the next check doesn't happen quite on schedule.

I wouldn't change it or worry about it. I waited until most of mine were below the spec. before I changed my buckets. Some of my intakes were so tight I had to check them with the engine hot just so I could get a .0015" feeler gauge in between the bucket & cam lobe. I did limit my rpm to under 6000 until I set the clearance on the loose side of the spec.

Well, all the exhaust are close to the lower limit ( but still in spec) and 3 of the intake are close with one that is too close. I wish I had a .15mm gauge as to see just how close as the difference between what I have to measure with is a thousandth of an inch. I guess in the bigger picture, the total clearance is only 6 to 8 thousandths ( two thousandths tolerance). I will check them again later in the year after the fall reunion and make sure nothing has changed and swap the bucket at that time doing an inventory of what buckets i have in place. It was easy to do the check while swapping the plugs and wires but I didn't want to pull the cams as i have no buckets and would likely have to wait and order it. I don't ride all that much unfortunately so I don't think it will cause a problem between now and then.

I've been hesitant about doing a valve check this time of year. Here, is is near the 95 degree max. recommended check temp. and the bikes are in a metal pole barn garage in full daytime sun. W/o getting up at the crack of dawn (not going to happen) it is pretty close to that max temp., which would make things expand, making the gap actually larger at cooler temps.?

Thanks for the vote of confidence :) I do want to pull them to inventory what buckets I have so I know what to find/buy when the time comes. Might as well fix that one tight one at the time I pull them later this year.

FWIW the last bike I did a full service on had several intakes that were very tight. One was at .0015" and four were at .002" and they had been that way for some time with no ill effects. They were all .006 when it left my shop.

I say you made the right call. Get a trend going and then you will know when to pull and fix.
