Am preparing for my first oil/trans/rear end oil changes. I searched the site and it appears that several (many?) are using Mobil 1 auto oil with good success. Makes sense to me since it's a dry clutch, but want to make sure you don't have to buy a 'bike specific' oil.

I'd like to get some feedback on this before I go out and buy stuff. Any opinions? Also, what weights would folks recommend for the NJ area? I'm thinking 15/40 engine and 80/90 for the gearbox and rear.

As for my riding, I do a fair amount of commuting on the bike, not just longer rides, and average 5K - 6K mi /yr.

mobil 1 synthetic 15w50 in engine, I have used it for the last 45k miles

You are getting the right stuff! And with the amount of riding you do an oil change will last you about a year, and air and fuel filters will last you 2 years.
As you mentioned the beemer has a dry clutch so there is no special oil requirements. Motorcycle oils address the emulsion issue with wet clutches.
You are good to go with your choice!:thumb:

Needs to be 50W.

I don't have a manual to check and see if 90 is high enough for the rear end.

Been wondering when the oil threads would start since the rest of the USA is starting to warm up.

I use Redline Shockproof Heavy in the Trans...shifts much smoother.
(looks like 120 weight Pepto-Bismol)

I would have a problem with that time table.
It is not the milage, as much as the time factor. Engine combustion results in residue products that have a high acid content and eat your parts.

I always use Mobil 1 - 15w50 in the engine and a synthetic Mobil 75-90 gearlube. in my 99.
Have had one valve clearance (bucket) change at 20,000 miles and no change in clearances up to 105,000 miles.

Had to change out the rear drive at 95,000 miles because of too much slop in the gearing.(I pull a trailer)

Great stuff, that Mobil!
