Just come back from a short 80 mile ride. Filled up with petrol and after leaving the garage to my surprise, the digital temp scale was all the way up to the top of the screen. Got home fine and, on reading my owners hand book it appears this is the oil temp gauge. So my question is -

Faulty oil temp sender? If so where is it?

Faulty display?

Possible loose wire in the relevant circuit?

Intending to travel to Spain 5th August so need to resolve ASAP. Drove 40 miles home with no leaks, noises etc. as another point. Allowing the bike to cool for 2 hours made no difference. Display still read as a complete bar whereas before oil temp got to about half way in normal riding.

Hmm... Really? My LT has only cooling temp meter/scale. No oil temp / scale. The sender is down on the left front end of the engine. Check the amount of cooling liquid. Did the fans kick on?

Hi there, thanks for the reply

Digital display is oil temp according to my owners manual (page 8)

Coolant temp is red warning light on left hand section of warning lights (page 10 owners manual)

No fans kicked in, coolant level fine. It appears to be definitely an oil temp / oil temp circuit issue.

Must be a missprint as our manual calls it Coolant temp. Also there is only a coolant sensor (the little blue one). It is located down on the front of the engine with the water/oil pump unit and is next to the oil pressure gauge sender. Make sure the clip is on it. If you replace it it is not a pipe thread so just snug it up gently against the crush washer or it will snap off.

Must be a misprint! Definitely says oil temp in my handbook. Anyway, have taken the lead off of the water temp sensor at the combined water / oil pump and, with the lead removed the led bar disappears, reappearing when the wire is reconnected so I am assuming that the sensor is faulty unless anyone disagrees with this diagnosis????

Sounds like the sensor, attach an ohm meter to the terminal and see if it's shorted to ground.

It should read about 695 ohms at room temp (see my picture).

If the wire to the sender is touched to the engine, the display reads the same as if the wire was connected to the sensor. New sensor ordered so fingers crossed!

This would mean your sensor has no resistance whatsoever (obviously defective) - this condition will emulate a very hot sensor.

These are typical "negative temperature coefficient" thermistors, meaning the hotter, the less resistance they offer. As JZEILER said, at room temp, resistance should be between 600 and 700 Ohms. If you drop tip in very hot water (almost boiling), you should read about 40 to 45 Ohms (between wire connector tip and body of sensor).
