top left hand corner of my trunk latck broke this am, with all the info about new latches, etc out now, can I just replace the latch or do I have to replace the entire assembly? Would like to do this as inexpensively as possible, also have pinnacle extended warranty, dont knnow if it is covered under that yet, though they did pay for new throttle cables for the bike.

Has the broken trunklatch been handled by BMW as a warranty replacement? I just confirmed that since my 2002 was sold as "Certified Pre-Owned" that it still has warranty left until July of this year, and it is transferrable to me!

I know that it will break again in the future if replaced with the BMW part, but if it is covered free of charge under warranty...

I dont know if this will be handled under warranty by bmw (probably not) they dont seem to care about anything else on their bikes, or even if pinnacle will take the claim, have to contact them in the morning, if not then will order a new latch. Thanks for all the info

Check your warantee coverage first. If that don't pan out - there're at least a couple options for ya! :thumb:

Some dealers have covered a broken trunk latch under warranty, but since BMW doesn't sell the latch separately you have to replace the whole lower trunk. I'm all for forcing a high warranty repair cost back on BMW, since they didn't feel it necessary to offer this part by itself.

But there are at least two options now for replacing just the latch yourself.

Found out today that bmw will not cover the latch (no big suprise there), neither will pinnacle extended wattanty.
I did manage to purchase a brand new one from Cycles Recycled in
Morganton, nc. for $133.00, email [email protected], if anyone is interested.

Hmmm .... I wonder why BMW would not cover it? They covered my fuel door catch and that seems to be the same type of breakage.

Yes you are correct. But your replacement will be the complete bottom half of the trunk, not just the handle. BMW DOES NOT replace just the broken handle. The parts you are hearing about are for those out of warranty that do not want to pay the BMW "You have to buy the old bottom half of the trunk" fix. This a stick it to der faderland fix. :thumb:

Now that's awesome news on the bone yard. Especially since we're moving to Morganton from Minnesota April 1st. Looking forward to the solid year round riding.

I received the new latch this am, via ups, pretty quick since I ordered it yesterday, I was thinking it would just be the latch for the $133, turned out it was a brand new complete assembly, I will definately do business with this individual again, just a pity that bmw does not treat its customers this way, they would probably have a 100% customer retention.
