I recently changed the engine, trans, and final drive oils on the LT. I let each drain a long time to try to ensure that I would get a clean fill. I did all the draining and filling on the CENTER stand. (BTW the mag drain plugs looked great)

My Clymer book says:

Transmission oil quantity 20.3 to 25.5 OZ.

Final Drive oil quantity 7.8 OZ.

When filling the trans. I got up to slightly over 20 OZ and the oil started running back on me. I caught the overflow and looked at the fill hole and observed the correct level at the bottom of the threads. I have no idea how much ran back out, but I would gestimate that I actually put less than 20 OZ in the trans.

On the final drive I put in the specified 7.8 OZ. If I rotated the rear wheel, the level went down below the fill hole and didn't come back up? I put in an additional .5 OZ and rotated the wheel again and the level went down again? Being concerned that I may have over filled the drive, I extracted the .5 OZ with my syringe and replaced the plug.

I have about 250 miles on now since the change and am going to pull the fill plugs on the Trans and FD and look at the levels, but before I do that I would like to hear from the experience here about specified quantity vs. actual level. :confused: TIA

I have always filled both to the bottom of the threads at every change and never worry.

Don't measure. 1 qt of gear oil will fill both the gear box and FD with a scoshe left over.

DO NOT turn the rear wheel in order to add more oil. It overfills the FD and you are likely to lose the overfill out the overflow.

Level the bike, fill to the bottom of the threads, torque the plugs back down and you're good for another 6000 miles.

According to the Clymer manual, FD fluid should be checked when at normal operating temp. ...& it should be even with the lower edge of the oil fill hole with bike on centerstand... If low, add as needed.

For gearbox and final drive....
With bike on Centerstand... front wheel touching the ground.. fill to the bottom of the fill hole then cap.

For engine..
With bike o Centerstand... fill to 3/4 full on the 'window'/sight glass... warm to op temp, fill to top of window.
