BMW may have done some thing right! The GTL owners manual calls for the following tire sizes:

FRONT: 120/ 70 ZR 17
REAR: 190/ 55 ZR 17

That means that we have tire choices! We are no longer stuck with only 1 selection, and the price that Metzler wants to charge. I also like the fact that the rear tire will offer wider contact area. A real WIN! / WIN!

BTW The salesman at my Dealer gets to go to Georgia next month to ride the Gt & the GLT.... I now officially HATE him. :histerica

The LT's rear tire is rated at 936 pounds.

From what I can find, the 190/55's are rated at 853 pounds.

I have a very limited knowledge of tires.

Will they have to manufacture a special load rating tire for the new GTL, or is 853 pound rating enough?

In other words, will the GTL use a standard issue 190/55?

Inquiring minds have to know!

Hey guys,

I'm on my second LT - that's 12 years of riding LT's. I've changed out the tires a few times, and naturally had to purchase the 2 or 3 offerings in the LT's special weight rating. But I've always noticed that the BMW Motorad web site specs the 'tyres' on the LT as the more abundantly found and plentiful ZR. I realize that the ZR rated tires would probably wear faster, gas mileage and service life would deminish. But why does BMW spec them as ZR? When I purchase the bikes new, they have the Metz ME880.

Any thoughts?

Let me see if I understand this.
One pays $25-26,000 for a motorcycle and then complains about buying tires?

This hobby we're involved in is an expensive one. Get over it and ride.

I think the OP was happy to have a choice of brands and models; this could also mean lower prices but it wasn't his primary point.

Agreed. I can find standard 180/55R17 tires for my GT at pretty much any bike shop, but getting the special 160/70R17 tires weight-rated for the LT was always a pain in the ass. Especially after you've picked up a nail in some podunk little town, or you've miscalculated how much tread you have left and are still 800 miles from home . . .

The 190/55R17 tires are a little more rare still, but some shops do carry them. And in a pinch, you could always fit a 180/55 if you need it to get back on the road.
