So I got the little things fixed on my new bike and was going to take the wife for a ride to see how she likes it. I needed to go fill it up before so I took off to the local gas station. Backed out of the driveway, over a couple of speed bumps, turned on the main road and took off good. Everything felt fine when all of the sudden the bike started shaking pretty bad so I slowed down. When I'd speed up a little it would go away for a second, but then it would start shaking pretty bad again. Slowed down figured that the tire must have gone down and I just had to make it to the station that was only a few hundred yards more down the road. When I started braking it would get pretty violent so I actually missed the turn and had to back it up in the middle of the road. Got to the gas station and everything looked OK so I figured I'd baby it the mile or so home and figure what was wrong with it there. As I was turning around I could feel that something was wrong, but had to get home so I went ahead and turned out of the station and it was shaking worse than before so I turned into a small apartment complex and parked the bike. I got off and started looking everything over good and as soon as I looked at the back wheel I see one of the bolts out of the rim. I was able to just pull it out it wasn't threaded in. Checked the other 3 bolts and they were all hand loose with only 2 or 3 threads in. Went home and got some tools and came back with my electric impact and tightened them up and took it home. Drove fine on the way home and everything felt OK, but now I'm really gun shy about this bike. If the wheel wasn't even bolted in what else isn't tightened down like it should be.

What really scared me is that I could have had the wife on there in the middle of a turn at 70 and the whole thing really could have just ripped out from under us. :wtf:

One item of regular maintenance on a motorcycle is ... check the torque of each and every fastener on the bike. The most certainly includes rear wheel.
It should not be done with an impact wrench. It should be done with a torque wrench, to the exact specified torque.
Vibration loosens fasteners on bikes all the time.
That's a good reason to check.
I believe you have not had this bike long. I think someone had the tire off and did not properly torque it back on.
Usually, if that is done, it will stay on with no problem.

Be a good idea to look up the torque spec and use a torque wrench.

Do this right, your life might depend on it.

Too much torque is real bad too.

As Gunny said "[t]oo much torque is real bad too." Also, it is critical that each bole be loosened and torqued to the specs in the pattern recommended. Just putting a torque wrench on there and setting it at 105NM will not give you the correct torque. Glad you caught it in time.

Sounds to me like someone was installing rear wheel and got side tracked and did not complete tightening the bolts after starting them by hand.

+1 on using a torque wrench on there and setting it at 105NM ...( 77FT# ) ....

ALSO...The bolts & holes should be clean & dry, never put any thing like anti-seize or other crap on the bolts...it will just get you into trouble that you don't want...

As you have illustrated the LT is indeed a very advanced machine, It was sending you a warning signal that there was a problem with the wheels/tires....You were just too green to heed the warning....Next time you feel something shaking, wiggling, rattling, or a wild howling noise, you should immediately pull over and check the bike thoroughly before proceeding... :rotf:

Happened to me way back. I went so far as to swap out the lugs (some of the threads looked a bit wonky after the unusual forces put upon them) and also ran a tap through the hub to make sure those threads were good.

I now check the torque on the lugs fairly regularly, and I install them according to the process in the manual. Made a believer out of me, and left a permanent pucker mark on the LT seat!

The same thing happened to me on my 99LT. I replaced the rear tire and installed the wheel with the bike tools. I tightened the bolts good and tight. About 6,000 miles later it just about came off. I lost two bolts and bent one. I tightened the remaining bolts up good then rode home slowly. I bought new bolts an asked what happened on this site. Torque the bolts was the advice. I did that and no more trouble. You should do as I did and you should not have trouble with it again.

Yes...heard it on here before. Use a torque wrench and follow the instructions in the manual. Same goes for checking torque by breaking the all bolts loose and re torquing to the specs. Over tight is just as bad as under tight.

Over-torqued is actually much more dangerous than under-torqued. An over-torqued bolt can snap the head off. This can result in ALL the bolt heads following suit immediately after. You can easily see what comes next. At least loose bolts will normally give you some warning when the wheel wobbles.

I like to reduce my torque to 75 pounds and use medium grade (blue) Loctite. Many will tell you I am crazy and that Loctite is a horrible idea. To each their own.
