It's normal and it needs sorting.
It's a common problem. You could swap out the cables and have them well greesed, but you have to keep doing that (i did it 3 times). The real solution is to have the '05 cables fitted. It's not just a matter of swapping the cables though.
The part numbers for the '05 Throttle Cable mod are as follows;
a) Throttle Cable: 32737694490 (Approx $40.00)
b) Acc. Cable: 32737694491 (Approx $60.00)
c) Twist Grip Mod Kit: 32727691990 ($25.00)
Take that to your dealers and check out how much it will cost (personally I didnt bother with the fairing bit - just got them to make a whole in my existing part)
It is well worth it and it will seem like a new bike - again!
This is a common problem and cOOK1e is exactly right. The most simple approach is to have it done at a dealer (not the cheapest) but, it is something you can do yourself. There are many threads on the subject on this board. Just do a search under "throttle cables" and you will find plenty of information. I did it myself a couple of months ago and it's not as straight forward as some of the documentation would lead you to believe. Proper adjustment of the cables is critical to keep your cruise control working. If you are thinking about doing it yourself, I would suggest looking for someone in your area who has done it, to help or advise. The upgrade makes all the difference in the world.

I just had my dealer do it on my 99. The price for the parts listed may be right but expect the dealer to replace part of the handlebar cover as well. The parts altogether for mine was $211. The dealer chared me about 6 hours labor. I started to do it myself and gave up with about half of the bike apart. If your dealer hasn't done the work before expect it to take them some time. My dealer ordered the cable for a 99 then found out BMW doesn't carry them any more. Then they got the wrong parts or at least not all of the parts. All together it took the dealer about 3 weeks. The new cables do work better though not a lot better on my bike.
I did the cable upgrade on my 2000 a few months ago. I think its like a new bike. This might be the most significant upgrade since it lets you enjoy the ride as intended.
I had some help from the forum. Thanks again Ksailor. The change over was not that difficult,got to understand the workings of the bike a bit in the process.

I do not know how soon you want to have this fixed, but I had the dealer do mine while it was in for its 36k (12k, 24k, or 48k, since I do not know how many miles are on your lt) service. This way, they should cut you some slack on labor charges as they have all the tupperware and fuel tank pulled off the bike for this service. I think that the labor charges were less then one hour. I also had them do the starter relay, but you should have the updated relay.
My 2002 cables were replaced last month when I carried it in for the 12K service. Parts were 135.20. It's like riding a new bike. They have to strip the bike down a good bit so it can be expensive in the labor dept.
