Oil around the intake

As I was contemplating selling the Bike. I actually posted it for sale here but there were no takers. I went out to the garage and HOLY CRAP I scared her and parts fell off. Apparently she is staying. And then I noticed something...I know someone has posted about this I am just having trouble finding it. My number 3 and 4 cylinders intake is coated in oil. I think you should be able to see in the Pictures. Can anyone tell me an easy way to get to the part that is leaking and what it is? If I remember right it is just a rubber hose but alas I can barely see in there. The Airbox needs to come off but I am not really sure how to get at the clamps that are on the throttle bodies. Two of the clamps are screw type clamps that of course are inaccessible by a screwdriver and the other 2 are crimp style that I would probably need a special tool to even remove.

You don't need much of a special tool to get the crimp clamps off. Just a long enough pair of pliers. You should be able to grab the crimp and twist it apart. Replace with screw type clamps like on the other intake tracts.

Be sure to note the orientation of the clamps and reinstall in the same way. Otherwise you'll play hell getting a screw driver on them to tighten.

Thanks for the info. I am gonna go out there and talk dirty to her now.

Oh and has anyone used an aftermarket quick disconnect for the fuel lines comming off the tank. I might post this one in a new thread for more trafic.

Just so I'm not cornfus'd (not too hard to do). the stock #'s listed are related to 1/4" based on a search on that site
Is that I.D./O.D. or what? :confused:

Paul, I'm guessing here, butt I would think the 'barb' OD of 5/16" allows for a 1/4" ID flow. Don't know if they've changed the description since ordering mine last year, butt tell ya what - I'll measure mine since ole Toad is near nekkid, and let ya know later (unless someone has the direct skinny).

1/4" relates to the approximate size of the male end of the coupler. Most couplers come in 1/4" series and 3/8" series. That is what you check for interchangability.

Yep - I measured both pieces and they're 1/4" ID at the male nozzles and 5/16" at the OD.

I didn't measure the tank hoses at the connecting joint, butt IIRC, they're 5/16" ID.

Here is a shot of the breather hose. Really easy if the engine is out.

Looks like that engine might have a small compression and oil retention problem !? :D

Just on #2 & #3 and a bit of oil sling off the right side.

I have decided to build breather tube. I refuse to pay that much money for a rubber tube. I am going to weld together some solid brake line and and not worry about a rubber tube that is going to have 3 cracks in it. I was amazed to see that my engine was idling as smooth as it was with 3 cracks in the line. I don't know how much vacuum is pulled off of these ports but 3 cracks can't help.

Once I fabricate the line I will connect it with short pieces of neoprene hose to connect it to the throttle bodies. so whenever the new rubber wears out I simply go to my stash of hoses and make some more short pieces and reconnect it. If anyone can see a flaw with this let me know.

Sounds like a good idea. Just be aware that when replacing a "preformed" hose with standard rubber hose, it will tend to "kink" in tight bends. Looks like you are on the right track. Be very interested in seeing a pic of the one you make.
