After 55,000 miles, my rear rotor has developed cowbellitus.

I have been perusing past threads and replacing with EBC seems like the easiest solution, albeit not the least expensive. My rotor is in great shape and I hate to trash it due only to noise, but as many of you know, it is a very annoying noise.

I have read about a few other solution attempts such as high-temp RTV, shoe goo (never heard of that), metal shims and replacing a couple of the rivets with screws/bolts. What I don't know is if any of these solutions had any longevity.

If anyone has a solution that lasted more than 10,000 miles, and didn't adversely affect braking, please let me know. I like the idea of replacing the rivets with screws, but I don't know how important the "float" is.

I have a 2007 and it came new with a 10 bolt rotor. There was a recall for the cowbell noise and mine was changed under warranty to a five bolt rotor. I'm not entirely sure what all was involved as far as new parts required for this change but the cowbell went away. I'm wondering if you ever had yours upgraded to the five bolt, not that the bastards would fix it now anyway. I plan to get the EBC whenever mine needs replacing.

Same here although my issue was squeal, not cow bell. So, I have had the five bolt rotor for probably 50,000 of the 55,000 on my LT. So, it will be EBC for me also if I am unable to find a way to salvage the OEM rotor.

Just curious what the thickness of yours is. I had one go to the limits and I swapped it with a used one, then that one went clanky on me and I put on a used EBC. So far it is working well and well within limits.

0.272" +/- at the OD where the pads don't ride.
0.262" +/- near the center of the swept area.

Not sure the specs. Will have to look them up tomorrow.

I just checked the EBC catalog and they have a note that this rotor is made from billet steel. I assume that means not SS, but it really isn't clear to me. Do you know if the EBC rotor is stainless? Any rust issues?

Also, I see that the catalog lists different front rotors for 97 - 10/00 (were LTs really made before 99?), 11/00 to 07, and then 07-09 models. And they don't list a front rotor for the 07-09 model years.

I thought the iABS came on in 01 or so and stayed the same until end of production. Any idea why they show a change at 07 and don't list front rotors for 07-09?

Just making sure before I place my order for the rear (kind of want SS) and looking at the fronts as they may need changed as they pulse badly when stopping. Still on the original front pads at 55,000 miles, but the pulsing is getting annoying...

Before I posted, I checked MAX and they list the same rear PN for both 99-04 and 05 09 both ABS and I-ABS. I know the front is different though but the rear is the same. The BMW rear caliper can be used on the Brembo rear as a substitute but not the front.

I garage keep mine also, but ride in the rain fairly often.

Well, it just hasn't come to that yet. ;)

Since I normally go 2up, rain in the forecast is not a desirable by the pillion so indoor activities win out.

So far, heat more than rain has kept me off the roads on solo ventures. Over 70 days this year above 90. I want to wear out some rubber but I don't want to melt it off ;)

It did not cow bell on me but I did have a screeching metal on metal ( not squealing) sound under some rear breaking but there are no signs of abnormal contact anywhere. so I don't know the actual source of the sound. It was like worn out pads, metal on metal.

I tried to remove the screws with heat but they did not come lose so I drilled off the heads believing I would never use it again. I can ship it if you want it. No timing ring but locktite would hold it on i bet.

Re EBC and "rust"... a few years back the boys at BBY told me they didn't stock the EBC fronts because of concerns over rust.
So I bought some from another US supplier, turns out they were mismatched rotors, eventually EBC UK shipped me some new ones, matched and correct spec.
Several years later (and not a lot of extra k's put on the LT) and living in a high humidity area close to the sea (like, within 1 mile of the ocean) and there are still no signs of rust on the fronts. I would happily put an EBC on the rear if/when I need to.

I appreciate the offer, but I pulled the trigger on my Amazon order yesterday and my EBC will be here Thursday or Friday. I figured for $140 and change it was worth going new. I may still try to salvage my original as a winter project, but didn't want the downtime during riding season. Lost too much time already with the nearly six week long clutch repair. Then again, I did much more then clutch (Wilbers, Speigkers, full throttle body removal and deep clean, etc.), but it was still too much downtime at the start of riding season.

I have been watching videos on moving the ABS ring and that looks like fun. Once the screws are removed/ground off, I think I am going to freeze the assembly and then hit the ring with a torch and see how that works. I may check BBY and eBay to see if I can buy just a sensor ring alone. That would make keeping the original as a spare much easier.

I wish i saw this post earlier as I have 2 EBC front rotors I bought for my 09. I ended up going with Lucas because you could buy a bobbin kit for the floating aspect. Messy mechanic that I am I lost a few of the bobbin parts I took off the originals.If anyone need front rotors I have 2 unused... OOPPS my bad I see it's rear rotor talk. I went with EBC rear but haven't ridden yet. But I do have 2 fronts for sale :)

It wasn't too bad getting the old ring off but I was doing it in the middle of winter and standing out in freezing weather trying to heat the screws and ring with a torch. It couldn't happen fast enough but still, wasn't too bad.
