Was just wondering what the lifespan was for a standard shock, also the tell tale signs of one going south? I have 31k on my 05 RT and going on a tour round Germany and Austria, and I don't want to be touring the alps with a soggy shock? Also what are the best options for replacing, is it a rebuild on the standard shock, or something like an Ohlins or Wilber?

No option available to rebuild the stock ones. Popped for the Wilbers and after the sticker shock, it has shaved years off the bike. Recommend Ted Porter's Beemershop. Good folks to work with before and after the sale.

I have an '05 1200RT and replaced my shocks with Wilbers at 57,000 miles (they started to get a little squirrelly at that time). Bought mine from Ted's Beemershop also. I tend to ride the RT as hard as my sport bike, so the change was welcome. Like the previous poster said, once you get over the sticker shock you'll REALLY like how the bike handles. I have 75,000 miles on the bike now and it still feels good.
