I noticed about two weeks ago that when first engaging the cruise control, it would surge and then disengage the cruise. Lasted for about 5 miles and than cleared up. Came home through heavy rain last night, live in Pennsylvania, and this morning when leaving for work, again in the rain, I noticed the speedometer intermittently would drop off and than pick up again. During this time the cruise control would not work. Cruise worked after about 10 miles of riding, speedo also seemed to work properly. Ride home from work was the same, first 10 miles both speedo and cruise were erratic, but straightened out after a while. Is the problem in the speed sensor??? If so, what is the remedy. Bike is 2000 KLt custom. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve Miller

Hi, Steve - read the threads and post on the #10 item here in the Hall of Wisdom. Some good info, as well as the fix. Good luck.

QUOTE "The sensor wire is tie-wrapped to the brake line to the rear wheel. Where the wire was fastened to the forward end of the rubber hose to the rear caliper, the sharp edge of the metal hose end had nearly cut through one of the wires. I spliced the wire, used heat shrink tubing on it, then put a piece of plastic tubing over it and re-fastened it to the hose.

So, if you start seeing your speedo becoing erratic, check this out. Even better, cut the tie-wraps and further insulate the wiring from the hose ends now, before the wire gets cut."

This is exactly the problem I had on my '01 a couple weeks ago. David had it described perfectly. Simple fix once you know where to look :)

Gentlemen, Followed Your Instructions, Could Not See Any Bare Spots In The Wires But Found 2 Areas Where It Was Crimped Rather Badly. Cut Bad Portion Of Wire Out And Spliced New Wires In, Speedo And Cruise Work Great!!!!!! Thanks For The Info, Saved Me Alot Of Time And Money, Now Taken My Wife Out For Our 29th Anniversary. Thanks, Steve Miller
