The crazy thing just died. Now here I am waiting for my wife to come get me don't know of a more helpless feeling. Sounds like the fuel pump make the normal. It doesn't sound as you get ready to start it. Nothing any of you can do but I thought I would share my frustration,

Your post was several hours ago. Any resolution to the problem? Were you able to get the LT home?

I must admit there wasn't much info on this. The only time mine did that everything was working except the engine quit. It would restart but would cut off.
Got a batch of bad fuel 10 miles before.

Any luck? Hope all is going better. Is the canister removed on your bike?

Check the fuel line in the tank.

There have been a few that have split inside the tank and you don't get anything to the engine. Know two people who have had this problem. All seems fine, you hear the whine of the pump, but the bike just cranks and doesn't start.

Just my 2 pennies worth.

After a short time the bike would restart but only made it about a mile more and died again. Got it trailered home. Very embarrassing. Once home I started the bike without any problem. After about 10 minutes the bike was still running but could hear the sound of the pump over the engine running. Sounds as though the pump is going bad to me bad I haven't looked at anything yet. I have not done a canisterectomy and not sure I need to. The bike just turned 54,000 miles and is the second time I was stranded. The first was the quick disconnects.

Well, let me be the first to say that I'm glad you where able to get it home safely. I think your on the right track--definitely fuel related. Have you ever got a wooosh sound opening your gas cap? If so, your canister is not venting--causing suction on the plastic gas tank.

There are just too many reason why you do need to do this,
if this is not the reason you're having problems right now,
it will be the reason for problems eventually.

Yep, by-pass the canister. My clogged and I had to trailer it home. Sure wish I had removed the canister prior to being stranded...... but that's me. I tend to put things off, and then get pissed when something happens because of it. :histerica

When it dies simply open the fuel tank and listen for the sound of air sucking into the tank. If you have this sound then the cannister or drain line (by the right side case) is clogged. You can run the bike with the fill cap loose as a temporary solution to get it home if this is the issue,

No woosh sound that I can tell of. The cap opens with no sound that I can tell of at all. Although there seems to be many of you that think the the canisterectomy is the thing to do so I'll look in to it. I have a couple of things to do while I'm doing all this which include fixing lights in the instrument cluster, doing something with the rear brake rotor, changing the rear tire, and changing the oil. So the old girl will be parked for a couple of days.

Did the bike die when you tried the cap? If it was just parked without operation or driven very little it probably did not build enough suction to starve the engine of fuel. The good thing about the canisterectomy is it will cost you no dollars...just a little time. If this doesn't fix the problem then it may be something more costly...i.e. fuel pump, fuel filter or something electronic. I wish you good luck...and keep us informed.

Remove the fuel pump assembly and look very closely at the fuel line between the fuel pump and the fuel filter. It's probably split. You might be able to tell this by squeezing the tube before you start separating the lines. Fuel will squirt out of the split sometimes.
While you're in there, replace the fuel filter.
Did you notice that the markings on this one piece of expensive molded rubber are different from all the other fuel lines? I think BMW is selling off old stock parts that aren't capable of handling ethanol in the fuel...
