Is it normal for the sidestand to have a bunch of freeplay? Mine moves up and down on the pivot bolt about 1.5 inches. A little movement would probably be normal but this seems excessive. Without taking it apart I can't see what is going on.

Yes - pretty much normal. The fork where it attaches is pretty wide. Mine moves quite a bit. I have had it apart and there is no wear on the bushing or the bolt. They just are not a tight fit.
