In my brief five weeks of a BMW ownership, the first 3.5 weeks spending countless hours on the forum learning about the 1100RT, I read about the problems with the center stands rusting / breaking from lack of lubrication, problems with the side stand, and decided to lube that bike.

I assumed to do the same on the LT, which I did right away using Boeshield T-9.

Went for a ride today, parked on what looked like a perfectly level parking area, and out of the corner of my eye it appeared the bike was starting to roll forward while on the side stand. Sure enough, had I not quickly grabbed the brake, it would have keeled over.

I always attempt to park heading up some kind of incline. Started using 1/2" board under the stand this evening for overnight parking. Good tip on using reverse for the center stand! I will have to try that for winter storage.

Should the side stand not have been lubed? Is there an adjustment for amount of friction it takes to move the stand? This is the last thing I expected to be an issue on this bike. Half tempted to spray some salt water in there and let it gunk up a bit.

I also noticed it sometime shuts off when the side stand it put down, other times not.

How do I tighten the side stand, do I need to do something with the neutral safety?

Goes in the shop Tuesday, good a time as any to get whatever needs fixed, done.

I use the side stand almost exclusively, except over winter storage.

I make sure that the engine is off, clutch out and roll forward against cylinder compression until it stops before deploying the side stand.

This way it can't roll any further forward unless it is able to rotate the engine.

When parking using the side stand you should always have the LT in first gear, never in neutral. You should also roll the LT forward with the clutch engaged to take up the slack in the drive train before laying it over on the side stand. Plenty of threads on the forum on the subject of LTs falling off their side stand. It's the easiest way to get into "Droppers Anonymous"

The engine will shut off when the bike is in gear and you lower the side stand. If you are in neutral it will stay running.

Thanks!!

Greatly appreciate the info. Be nice to get at least a basic training course included with the purchase of a bike like this from a dealer. Surprisingly, it seems they assume you know what you need to know. Other than some quick instructions on the controls, your on your way.

Hopefully, I can take full advantage of this forum, and learn from the mistakes others have already made. I would not be on the road at all, nor have the LT, had it not been for all the great information provided on the forums about the RT we very briefly owned.

Fortunately, the LT appears to be much more user friendly (more so riding two up) than I found the RT to be.

Ditto on the parking brakes.

Also take a MSF course when you get a chance. ERC is the advanced and BRC is the basic. ERC on your own and the BRC on 250cc. Even if you have been riding for a while it is a great refresher class.

We both took the BRC before we left with the 1100RT. Great class! SO got her license the day before we left.

Almost overwhelmed myself with too much information. Got the "Sport Riding Techniiques" book by Nick Ienatsch a couple days before the test. Tried to use too much info, too soon.

Traffic has increased many times over since I last rode some 18 years ago. I quit after one too many close calls back then.

Living in fear for the past nine years of "what if" my medical condition gets any worse, left me very few options to live any kind of a life. The motorcycle has brought back a spark of at least giving it another go. Been a lot of fun on the LT so far.
