I have about 2 months on the LT now and I have a couple of questions about the stands.

1. When I put this bike on the side stand at even the slightest angles I get the feeling that it's going to fall over. Depending on the angle it seems it may go either way. It almost seems the bike doesn't tilt far enough to the left or perhaps too much to the left when the stand is down.

2. When using the center stand on a slight right to left angle, does it compensate for the lean and make the bike site level? I know this sounds stupid but when parking at thise angles the center stand seems more stable.

I never had a bike that may me feel so uneasy about parking it. I have seen many posts where people have dropped LTs numerous times. Am I being overly concerned?

I can't speak for anybody else, but, coming from riding HDs for the past 27 years, it took me some getting used to about the center and side stands.
First, the "jiffy stand" on a HD locks into place when it is down, giving you the safe feeling that it's not going to fall over.
With my LT, the only time I use the side stand, which does not lock in place, is when I'm getting off the bike. Once I dismount, the center stand is used.
I just keep an eye on the angle of the ground when parking, if I park on a slight incline or decline, center stand is still used. Could use a parking brake!
If the angle, left or right is too great, then I'm forced to use the side stand.
One can only hope that the German BMW team will improve on these designs in the future... would not count on it!

I have had a great deal of issues with the stands. Unable to get the bike on the center stand unless on level macadam, which I rarely see and have only done twice. I had the bike just about fall at least twice as it pivoted around the side stand. A few weeks back, I parked in a gravel lot with other bikes right along side, using the side stand (they had no issues whatsoever), and was just BARELY able to right the bike, and then mount it while trying to balance it on an incline, and get on without it falling over the other way.....that was way too close a call for me.

Since then, I carry a piece of 3/4" plywood and another piece of 2"x4", tied with parachute cord and stored in my tank bag. One or the other is used to park on inclines (should I need one) I would otherwise not be able to right the bike, the other end is put on the handlebar with the cord so I don't ride off without it.

I also have one of the orange "feet" deals you can buy from a dealer for $4 or so, for those hot days parking on macadam.

I first got way too comfy with this side stand after coming from a very tippy feeling RT. I thought this was great, until I found I was not able to right the bike one day after my pillion had first mounted..and just about did myself in.

I never let the pillion mount until I've got the bike straight up first. Why would I want endanger them, me or the bike?

None of the bikes I've owned had a locking sidestand. That being said, I haven't had any problems with dropping a bike off a sidestand, including the LT.

A couple of tips.
-Always park in gear and push the bike forward against the drivetrain lash before setting it onto the sidestand.
- Turn the handlbars to the left to put more lean on the bike if needed. Turn to the right for the opposite. This comes in handy if you have to park perpendicular to a slope. Too much lean is just as bad as not enough.
- Hold the sidestand forward against its stop with your foot as you set the bike down on it. This ensure it is fully deployed and over-center.

I find the sidestand on my LT quite proficient. If your bike sits low, the sidestand will seem too long. Bikes that have been lowered need the sidestand shortened as well.

Hey Tony -Welcome!!

We have an 05 as well and have noticed the following tendencies:

-It seems to lean way too much to be "right" on the sidestand-but thanks to Messy and Joel we learned to try the sidestand instead of the auto-centerstand as they witnessed the "push offs" 2-up on the back roads of Ohio, sometimes not pretty. At that time I only used the center 2-up.
Since then we use the side mostly and it is alot more controllable.
-When pushing off the center allow the bike to roll a bit-i.e. don't try immediately stop the forward motion.
-Scope out your parking area and avoid grades that work against you gravitationally especially when using center.
All this being said I've only dropped my bike @ 0mph all parking or un-parking.

Well, I've only dropped my LT once when I got cut off in a parking lot with the SO on the back. 0 MPH, but couldn't hold it up. Having said that, I alsmost dumped it again when I put it on the side stand with the engine running and the SO on the back, but caught it as it started to roll off it.

I have the Wunderlich sidestand extension and do recommend it. It adds a minisucle amount of height, but a much wider footprint. But if you are going to use the sidestand, only use it with the engine off and in gear. I've been doing the sme with my RT. Keeping it in gear that is. It prevents the rolling off motion. I also use the powered centerstand whenever I can, but only on level ground.

My SO only gets on after I tell her to, which is always when I have th emotorcycle engine running (for braking), gear in neutral, handlebars straight, and my legs in position to hold the motorcycle while she gets on. Getting off is similar unless I am on the centerstand in which case I get off fisrt and hold the motorcycle (just in case) while she gets off.
