Well the stud on ball on shift lever broke today down in the threads. Yes I have lubed it... : ) It was still nice and slick. It looks like the stud may have been coming apart for a while - top threads are buggered and the break looks kinda old - not shiny or fresh a like a new break. May have just been in there til threads let go.

Anyone have one for a reasonable price? Beemerboneyard is out and I don't have the cash for a new one, being currently unemployed. Otherwise, just may have to let the beast sit a while til things get better.

Is it possible to put a helicoil in there if I can get the rest of the stud out of the hole? I'm estimating it broke off about halfway in.

PM me if ya can help or have any suggestions.

thanks
Randy

Well the good new is it looks like I can get by with just a new ball stud. Yes the top 3 threads in shift lever are buggered, but there is over 5/16" of stud that came out of hole. I think I would be willing to take that chance and not have to buy a lever now.

Where do you find the ball studs? Does anyone have dimensions or a number to ask for? We have an industrial supply house I might try but if I have more information, I have better chance of success.

Hey Randy, what model year is your LT?
I have my original shift linkage from my 03 that I removed when I installed the beefier PhilJohn unit as a preventive measure.
It is still in good shape and you can have it for free. Just PM me your shipping address.
All you'll need to do is grease it before installing.

I think he is after the foot lever Gilles. The ball stud is a 6mm thread. Not sure if they are commercially available but the dealer should have them. PN 07119901736 $3.29

Or you could enlarge the hole to an 8 mm thread and install the beefier 05 and up ball stud.

PN 51247010221 $2.19.

Oh... Randy, can you confirm which part you need, maybe post a picture? Thanks!

Will the 05 +up ball stud work with the rest of the 03 linkage? I wouldn't mind beefing it up and drilling/rethreading would be a better solution, since the first 2 threads are boogered up on my shift lever. Would I have to change the entire linkage?

Right now, I can get by with a ball stud. I've been everywhere in town looking with no luck. BMW dealer is an hour away. Or I can see if they will mail it to me, I guess.

Thanks
Randy

Rando,

The ball stud for the 05 is the same diameter ball just the stud threads are beefier. None of the Mcmaster Carr stuff on that page will work. Look here for some good info on Shift Linkage

No need to replace the rest either - just make sure they are tight. They only fail when they get loose.

I didn't get an email notification of this, so I'm just getting to it. THe closest dlrs are closed today (monday) anyway. So I'll have to call tomorrow and see if either place has either part in stock.

Figure I'll get a couple and let em roll around in trunk. Could fix roadside if I had parts and breaks again. Conicidentally, even the little bit of the broken one will still thread in - so I don;t think I really fouled any threads. What looks fouled is probably where the shoulder above threads rubbed as it came apart. At least that is my take on it. JUst need new balls. So to speak.... : )

THanks for all ya'lls help. JUst need it fixed by weekend - supposed to escort a bicycle race.

Our local NAPA store had them in stock when I needed one.

Great - I'll go check before I call the dealer - thanks! Of course OUR NAPA store probably won;t have it, but I'll definitely ask. Any particular WAY you had to ask so that they had an idea of what you;re talking about? I got the part to show, but so far, everyone has looked and been quick to say no.

Thanks

Hi Randy, as said before they break if they come lose. Drill the rest of the stud out with a 5,0 mm Drill and rethread it or go for one size bigger would be 8 mm. Drill 6,5 mm and thread with M8. Put Loktide on.
Cost you 3,50 $ and an hour work.

I replaced my shifter linkage with the one that was shown being sold on ebay. I am pretty sure I have the linkage I took off still, and if that is what you need, I would be more than willing to let you have it for the cost of shipping.

Just broke one of mine Friday. Anybody have the part number for the one available from Napa? I went to the local NAPA store and they said they have anything, and the BMW dealer is at least an hour away. And I really don't want to have to wait for mail order. I want to ride!
