Cool.

Is that the old reformatory at Mansfield? If so, I've always wanted to visit it - my great uncle taught at the prison school there for many years. My dad has the sidearm his uncle/my great-uncle carried with him.

BTW - that photo of you behind bars... did you have any flashbacks or anything? :D

Yes it's in Mansfield right next to the current prisons. As the story goes it was supposed to be razed right after the filming of Shawshank Redeption but a historical society wanted to preserve it and the state refused. A couple of the out buildings were brought down and finally the state relented and auctioned it for $1 to the society. There is a lot of work to do especially related to the lead based paint that is peeling off the bars and walls.

I have visited prisons before for business purposes and years ago in Michigan as I checked in one of the guards claimed that I had an outstanding warrant and I would be detained. I must have turned white & then green trying to remember some traffic ticket that I may have forgot to pay. He started laughing . . . very dark humor!

Great place but found out the hard way you cant photograph the old prison from the new prison side. Had security all over me. Btw, courthouse and workshop movie scenes were filmed in my town 40 miles to West.

Yes they warned us when we were on the roof at a guard tower not to take any photographs because the working prisons were visible. Claimed to have cameras on us when the tours go to that location and would find the photo perps! :rulez:
