Physics at work.
A rotating mass (your wheels) will always try to stay in the same direction they are.
Got to see this in action as a teenager. One night at the local short track races a guy dumped his bike in a corner, picked it up and pushed into the infield. He was standing beside it and tried kick starting it. The bike must have been between gears because as soon as it fired it dropped into gear and took off. Turns out his throttle was stuck open.
The bike, riderless, ran the complete length of the infield. It even made a small jump when it went over a mound of dirt. It went right between 2 flaggers at the far end, boy were they surprised, crossed the track and rammed the far wall.
One of the funniest things I ever saw racing and a lot of strange things happen at the races. Boy was the rider pissed. Bend his forks and front rim badly.
