I'm new to the list, currently own/ride an old R100RT and an '04 K1200GT.

Thinking I'd like to try the luxury of an LT, but......98% of my riding is solo,
and I don't like the "empty throne" look of the vacant passenger seat as emphasized by the big trunk, passenger backrest, speakers, etc, etc.

Is the trunk removable? Does anyone know if there is a kit to convert it to a more GT type rear? I guess what I want is the look of the back of an R1150RT without the optional trunk. (I had an RT, loved the riding position, etc, and the look, but could never, ever make that transmission shift without an obnoxious clunk. And once I rode a K motor bike, I have a hard time settling for an opposed twin. Old airhead excepted :) ).

Have any others customized their LT's for solo luxury touring with a GT or RT look instead of the empty throne?

Thanks for suggestions.

As mentioned earlier, the trunk is removable, and the process is straightforward and will not take more than maybe 20 minutes.
Once you removed the trunk you may want to consider the following options:
- leave the bike as is. There is a black plastic cover under the trunk that will lend the bike a somewhat finished look without the trunk.
- buy a Ft.Worth rack (available from BMW dealers, among others). This will give the bike a real neat, finished look, especially if you also buy the optional grab rail. The rack/rail combo goes for about $390)
With the above 2 options you'll still keep the passenger seat.
- if you're prepared to shell out roughly $900, you can buy a Corbin Smuggler (see the Corbin web site for details). This is a custom replacement trunk and will lend the bike a sporty look. This will claim the space that the passenger seat occupies so this is only for solo riders (unless you want to move back and force between the Corbin, and the stock trunk).
There are also some pics on this forum of LTs with Corbin Smuggler installed.

The photo that Tony attached (which I assume to be a stock Corbin photo), reminds me of at least one caveat with regards to the Corbin Smuggler: the photo shows a Corbin Smuggler AND a Corbin custom seat/backrest combo.
In my experience, if you keep your stock seat at least one of the more popular backrests, the Backup, will NOT fit the bike.

Thanks to all for the info and pics, the Fort Worth set up looks exactly like what I had in mind.

Also have gathered some info on J-pegs, and am closer to decision about selling the '04 K1200GT in favor of an LT purchase!

Thanks again.

I've posted this on another thread, but i'll do it again.. This cost me a grand total of 75 bucks. BMW Motorad Club of Illinois has a great new video on using this Harley rack on the lt. I bought everything i needed via their ebay link. Looks great (in my opinion). As far as trunk removal, i can do it in 5 min. After you remove it the first time, Put the mounting screws thru the liner instead of under. The eliminates 2 extra steps, and looks fine.
Here is a link to the video

and a link to the rack. He says he's only got one left.http://www.ebay.com/itm/luggage-rack-for-Harley-Davidson-tour-pak-pack-ultra-classic-road-glide-hd-H-D-/282359800106?hash=item41bdf4a12a:g:9rIAAOSwo4pYUv~s

Fort worth Rack looks good, but way overpriced. That is if you can find one.

Still no rack, but at least it's trunkless now

Handles great but at 80 mph I feel like I'm getting pushed or pulled forward.

that's ya big screen, and yep it is knocking on the back of your head, the wings under the mirrors also make a difference to the handling from closed to open

I always leave the wings folded flat. I switched to a smaller euro-cut screen and keep it low, except on the highway or in the rain.

So that's it. I raised the screen and sped up on the highway and got sucked forward. I try keeping the screen lowered next time.

I took the trunk off for a while and liked it. Then, I took a trip and put the trunk on for the storage. I really do like the storage space, particularly in winter when I put my helmet, gloves and thick jacket in it with one of my side bags holding various layers as well.
