I just took the charcoal canister out because of engine dying. Runs like a new machine. I always fueled the bike on the side stand but since the canister is now out, I've been fueling with bike upright. Which way is the correct way. I believe the canister filled up because of overflow on side stand. Which oway is correct?

Did you reroute the hose that used to run to the canister from the tank to the ground near the swing arm pivot along with the rear brake reservoir o'flow tubes? Better that way in case you overfill the tank. Then it doesn't matter - I fill on the side stand FWIW.

lLooking forward from rear, the left hose get a bolt into it to block it off and the right hose is connected to the hose going to ground . Easy fix. Got the directions from guy who did video from Northern Illinois Club when I was at the National in St. Paul.

It seems to me that you would have the potential to get more fuel in the tank on the side stand. My reasoning:
  • the filler is on the right side which is the highest point of the tank on the side stand
  • due to the tank shape I would think on the center stand you could get air trapped on the left side without the angle. Most of the volume of the tank is in the compartments on the side and just a narrow portion in between from what I can tell.
  • since the filler cap screws down into the tank there is that depth which won't get fuel simply because the nozzle will shut off when it becomes immersed in fuel. On the side stand this space is minimized because of the lean of the bike away from the filler.

I don't know that it really matters, and I don't know how you would be able to know for sure, just thinking out loud here and I could be all wrong on this to so...

Did you have a sucking sound when you took the cap off during refueling?

You can disable the canister without taking it off the bike, remove rear seat and disconnect the hoses.

Yes, gas will go down hose to canister by dropping bike. To eliminate the canister, I went to K1200LT charcoal canister removal on google. Video from the Northern Illinois BMW Club came up. The video is very helpful. I watched the video over lunch on smartphone and went back and did it. No problem. Bike now runs great again.

Been filling upright, tried it on the side stand and squeezed another .75 gallon in it.

Stupid question. If charcoal canister is not needed, what it the purpose of having one except to have one more thing to worry about?

It does two things. It captures gasoline fumes which would normally vent to atmosphere and then burns them off in the engine. It also filters the incoming air to your fuel tank as the tank empties. Don't know that this would ever become an issue, but it's why mine is still connected.

There are three hoses routed to my charcoal canister. What is the difference ?
One takes gas fumes from the tank to the canister when the engine is off, one sucks gas fumes from the canister into the intake and one allows fresh air to enter the canister. The line going to the canister from the tank is hooked up to a tip over valve on the tank and should stop raw fuel flowing in a laydown.

Easy fix for this, just put a cheap in-line fuel filter in the hose, that way as the air gets sucked in to fill the tank, it goes through the filter, no dirty air.

Ever try buying a new car that doesn't have a charcoal cannister on it??? Government requires it, or you can't sell it in the US. Obviously the Germans don't require them, or they would have been able to engineer a charcoal cannister vent system that doesn't cause the tank to collapse, wreck the fuel sender, make the bike run like crap until it quits....all because you put a tiny little bit too much fuel in the tank...Oh well, I guess if everything on the bike was perfect, and nothing ever gave us problems or broke, why would we need a forum??? I LOVE THIS BIKE!!!!!!!!

it is easy to bust on the engineers but being an engineer on a complicated machine is not easy. Although I also wonder sometimes how they can get the most complicated stuff to work "ABS" and yet screw up some of the seemingly simplest things, but then I can't even make grilled cheese and tomato soup without screwing it up.
