Just got back from the North Carolina Spring Training Camp on my 2001 LT (did 2000+ miles in 5 days) to find a chunk of rubber missing from my rear tire. See pictures. It is a Bridgestone BT 020 Radial, 160/70R17 and the front is a Metzeler ME880 Marathon 120/70R17. Don't know how many miles are on the tires (bought the bike in October 2007) but I have put on 6000 since getting the bike. Keep the tire pressures at 42F and 48R.

Anyone have a thought on why the tire would fail like that? Is it a surprise that there was no blowout?

Changing both tires this week.

Dan, this has been discussed a lot in the past and I would use the search function to get the straight scoop but I believe Bridgestone stopped selling the radial size for the LT and only sell/recommend bias ply for the LT. Metzeler is the same, recommended tires are bias ply. I believe TJ Tennant, the Bridgestone power sports engineer told us this at the tire seminar at CCR last year.
