The person who installed the AutoCom unit on my bike did a very professional job--he (or she) just messed up the wiring so that I only got mono (sound, that is) through the headsets.

After several weeks of hemming, hawing and building up my courage, and thanks to the invaluable help of the members of this board, I opened things up yesterday and disconnected the intercom add-ins in preperation of doing it right. (I also discovered the problem: the installer did a shortcut and only tied in three wires instead of four, making something common that BMW had decided should be separate.)

As part of doing it right, I would like to make sure I wire the headsets in phase. I've discovered that the yellow wires go to the left speaker and the blue ones go to the right, but if anyone can save me the trouble of opening the top box up to get to the speaker terminals, I would appreciate it.

All I need to know is which wire (plain or striped) is the + and - speaker terminal. Anyone with a wiring diagram or experience who can tell me this?

This is the correct way to wire it.

I used the above diagram and all works well.
(although left/right are not explicit and may need to switch earphone position)

Thanks, guys, I'm an idiot.

I have that diagram and even used it but somehow missed the polarity indications. In my defense, I'll say it was because MY wires are red and white, not red and blue as shown there.

However, since I have the two wire (no switch) version, I really want to make sure that I observe the polarity phasing.

As to the headset's left and right, I checked that out with a signal generator and labelled the wires going to the AutoCon so I can be as anal as I feel I need to be about that. :)

My next step will probably be to add my own switch to cut out the rear speakers in favor of the headset. Anyone know where to buy a weatherproof DPDT toggle that would be right for this bike and application?

A search didn't find it, so...

To the AutoCom experts out there: When you have the module that includes the switch, does the switch just interrupt the rear speaker signal or does it actually switch from speakers to headsets?

The way to tell, I suppose would be to have the switch in the "speaker" position and see if the headset are on as well or if they were to be shut off when the speakers were on.

I can definitively say: It's a three posion switch (Autocom part 1321 which used to be part 67).
Up position: Bike speakers only.
Middle position: Everything off.
Bottom position: Helmet speakers only. Specifically, the signal is sent to the Autocom unit through the sub-mini stereo plug.

Now if you mount the switch so it goes left to right, I don't know what each position will do :D

Ok, got it. Thank you. I have the AutoCom interface without the switch so I was going to do this on my own. Looks like I can get away with a DPDT switch and use the connection diagram referenced above to figure it out. I'd only have two positions (speakers OR headsets) but that would be ok.

Maybe I'll just hide it under the seat like a seat warmer switch and tell my passenger it's activated by mind commands. :)
