Bought a few parts from a guy that did a trike conversion on an 05 LT when it had 1000 miles on it.

One of the parts was the rear shock with reservoir.

My 03 with 55k has the original rear shock.
Wondering if installing the 05 shock would be a good idea.
They are different part numbers.

I have read about the suspension system on the 05 being updated.
Don't know if the geometry / dampening, on the rear end was changed though.

Thoughts?
Any shock pro's out there?

Not in the market for Ohlins or aftermarket shocks at this time.

They are physically the same but the 05 was an up graded shock. It will fit. And you do not need to remove the tank to change the shock but to get a wrench on the nut you need to remove the nut on the subframe and back it out enough to get a wrench in there. Stuff a rag to fill that cavity so you won't have to look far when you drop a nut or washer.

Here is a few shots of my last shock swap out. Each nut has a plastic cap as they are close to wiring harnesses. The sub frame nut also has a washer while the shock nut does not. You can see the sub frame bolt almost backed out but you cannot see the shock bolt.

That's good news. I was ready for "it's going to ride like a pogo stick" or "can't do that, BMW specially engineered the shocks for the specific year bike. Dangerous...", etc..

Installing the 05 final drive now.
Shock swap shouldn't be a problem in its current state.

I was going to say before you install the 05 drive pop it open and see how tight the taper bearing is on the ring gear assembly. I pull them and apply green loctite sleeve retainer as they have a tendency to spin on the shaft when it gets hot. If you don't change the final drive oil for 20 K miles (and find it blacker than the ace of spades) they can surprise you with about 3/4 of a mm of wear!

But you can still pop it open on the bike and check it.

Oh and I see the proper bike gets the lift!!

That's a good idea I'm sure.
Time to research that procedure and make sure I won't need tools I don't have.
Otherwise I'll put it on & ride out the rest of our warmer weather here and check it this coming spring

Somewhere along the line, the guy I purchased the trike conversion parts from lost one of the para-lever bearing cones. Didn't think much of it at the time.
How much could a little tapered needle bearing be?

Turns out they are only made for BMW and they are happy to part with them for $70 a pop..

Oh well, it will put a big smile on my face when I get her on the road.
