Bike has 87k miles and I have just noticed an oil leak. It does not seem to be coming from the drain plug or filter. Nor does it seem to be from the transmission plug. Looks like a faulty rear main seal. Any advice? Any idea how much to fix?

Most likely it is the rear main. Mine started showing some oil many, many thousands of miles ago. The advice I got from this forum was to ride it until it quit. I did. The bike made a trip to Death Valley, New England and several one and two day trips. The rear main most of the time will not foul the clutch so that shouldn't be an issue.

It will cost you between $1,500-2,000 to have the dealer replace the seal and clutch (may as well while you're in there). If you do the labor yourself the price will drop significantly. I think the clutch and all seals will come in around $500 if my memory serves me correctly.

If the main is leaking badly you probably will have to address it...some leak barely. To acquire some other information go up to search and type in "Main Seal"

You can spend some time reading some wise advice from the past experiences of others on this subject to help you decide which direction you should go.

Personally, I drilled a hole in the bottom of the bell housing after I discovered a leak. I cleaned it up nice and have been periodically checking...it's still clean.

I have decided to do the work myself. I've got the time and can get advice from a good friend who has done this on his K1100RS. So.....time to bite the bullet.
I'm doing this for two reasons: 1. Have never really done much myself on this bike beyond changing the oil and FD fluid; 2. Save money.
I've got the time and a reasonable garage to work in. I'll get the manual and take my time.

Good luck. I've had mine down as far as the clutch save cylinder and it wasn't that bad.

Just take your time and follow the 'How to' posts and you should be fine. There seems to be plenty of folks out there who are willing to lend the special 30mm socket you will need to remove the swing arm.

Lots of parts to come off but doable.

Replace all the seals in that area. I had the rear main replace, then the following year had the bike back for the input shaft seal. $1500 x 2....! The second trip, the manager made sure they replaced any seal that had been in place since manufacture. Fork seals went the third year with right at 80K miles.
