After someone brought it up on the forum, I took a look at the requirements for gearbox and rear drive oil for my '05 on the maintenance CD. Gearbox SAE90 and rear drive 75W140. I just brought this up as many people say 1 quart of oil will do both. Not on the '05 or '06. I wished someone had told the BMW dealer in Oklahoma City this. They put 90W in both at 6K service. So watch your dealer.

So if BMW changed the spec, would it be a good idea for earlier bikes to run the 75W140? Maybe it's not all the 17 ball bearing change, that might help rear drive failure problems. Just a thought.

Rick,

Don't worry about it just use the 75W140 synthetic in both. I don't think they changed anything in the gearbox to support the change in oil.

But for us northerners

My manual called for SAE 90 hypoid gear oil for both the tranny and rear drive. I switched to Mobil1 75W90 synthetic at 12K and never had a problem for 45K miles. (Not much, I know) I just couldn't imagine what 75W140 would be like at 20°F. :eek: Could you?

It would be the same Joe. 75W90 and 75W140 have the same viscosity, except one coats like 90 weight and the other coats as if it is 140 weight.

My terminology might be incorrect.

what the "W" is for

the "w" is for winter weight........
75W140
would not get to 140 weight until it warms up and the polymer chains
expand.
At 20F this might take a while but not as long as you think.
