All,

I had this rear brake squeal. I replaced the brakes with EBC, but, after a few miles, the brake squeal continues.

Anyone had this issue?

Also, I noticed the rear rotor is loose. Meaning, I can move it side to side. Is this normal?

Did you bed the new brake pads after installing them? A search for bed or bedding brake pad should give you some results. I've not had to change pads yet, so haven't committed the process to memory.

The factory rotor floats, so I think it's normal. If I'm not mistaken, this is what causes the cowbell.

Need more cowbell! :D

HTH, but if not, I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I will be along shortly.

no it is not normal, and many of the folks have including me have had this, there has been recalls and all sorts of wierd ways to fix it. but replace the rotor with an ebc for a start , that will fix the rotor for good.. make sure your new pads are not grooved from running on the old rotor, there is plenty of info on this. search for loose rotor and heaps of stuff will come up for you to look at

Edit: yes the disk will have some movement it is a floating disk but once it is moving sideways and sloppy needs to be replaced.

Not sure if your bike is still in warranty but there is a warranty replacement rear rotor. I had mine done at no cost and never had another squeal since.

Not good if the rotor is loose. Rotors must be secured tightly! I advised before to use Brake Disc Quiet on the back of the clips or the metal back of the pads before you install them. Any parts store carrys it.

The LT rotor is a floating rotor? That's a new one on me, I have an '04 and my rear doesn't move at all, maybe you guys with the fancy newer bikes have different brake systems...

1. Check the rotor, if it's "loose" there might be a safety issue, not just a nuisance squeak

2. if your bike is in warranty, take it in and get the rotor swap under recall--otherwise it's a $250+ part plus I think two hours or more labor, which isn't worth it if your rotor isn't warped (BMW changed rotors to deal with the complaints, not for performance issues)

3. If it isn't, get a $5 bottle of this:



Put it on the back of your pads.

4. if you want, replace your pads (SBC and EBC HH series seem to be the most popular among forum members)

Yep, Pete. All three brake rotors are called "floating stainless-steel brake disks". Movement by hand is usually imperceptible, butt they do 'float' under brake caliper pad application. So says the book! ;)

I'm betting that's not within spec, though, and would venture that it may be (or become) a safety risk--I'd check the torque on the bolts at a minimum if it were me.

Mine does the same thing and it was loose on the right side front too. BMW of Milwaukee told me they need to be loose but I needed a new rotor, because from too much movement, the slots have been worn out. They ordered a new rotor and for the while they installed new washers. The rotor did not move any more and brakes are working perfectly--so I called off the new rotor.
Still making chirping sounds in the back and it's driving me crazy everytime I brake..
