Hi, All,

I just returned from a terrific 886 mile ride from D.C. to Chicago on my new-to-me 2003. What a bike! Sure made me pleased with the purchase.

However. Ugh. There's a clear metal rattling sound coming from the FD and/or the rear wheel hub. No oil is evident anywhere, and when it sits in idle on my driveway it's easily noticable.

I need ideas since I haven't even had a chance to order a manual yet. Is there a way to check the oil level in that component? Would it even matter at this point? I'm pretty handy with repairing things, so that part doesn't concern me (much.)

Oh, and I joined the ranks of bike tippers the very first time I tried to take the darn thang off its center stand--even with sound advice. Soft landing on grass. After that eventuality was behind everything else was easy. Until now.

Easy way to check the Oil is to remove the top fill plug, it the Round Plug with the Hex in the center, 6mm I think. Oil should be to the bottom of the thread, the FD only takes .24 quart, so there is not a lot of oil. It might be best to drain the fluid from the bottom plug, 19mm. There is a magnet on the plug, grey metal fuzz is okay, metal flakes are not. Use 75W-90 GL-5 Gear Oil. I used Purple Synthetic from O'Rielly at $17is per quart.

Could very well be the rear disc, it 'floats', shouldn't be so noisy - but a much easier problem than the FD. Crossing my fingers for you...

Stu,

This isn't your final drive. A totally trashed final drive won't make noise with the bike sitting at idle.

I agree with your first responder, check the brake rotor. That's a likely suspect.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks for the tips, folks. I'll check the brakes (and the FD's oil level while I'm at it.)

I'm guessing that "cowbell syndrome" means "you might as well get used to it."

It's clearly the culprit is a rattling rear rotor. It noise goes away when either brake is engaged--and when I simply push the rotor.

Mine is noisy too, or so my wife tells me. I'm bad hard of hearing and don't notice, which might be a good thing here.

She tells me it rattles, squeaks and squeals. Pads aren't worn out and it stops the way I want it to when I want to stop.

All is good.

His bike is a 2003 so his brakes are linked. It doesn't matter what brake lever he uses they both apply both brakes.
