I have a new R1200RT and would like a little protection. What is your advice for a radar detector and a laser jammer? Your help and advice is very much appreciated.

I've had many over the years: Cobra, Whistler, Bel, Escort, etc. None of them have worked better nor have given me the critical warning information than my current Valentine V1. Simply an outstanding and very durable unit. It's all about the sensitivity, filtering and the arrows!

Laser Jammer? Lot's of controversy about laser jamming. I just don't think there is sound scientific data accumulated under real world conditions to support the claim that these things actually work well enough to warrant their use. If I get a full-bore laser warning on my V1, I know that the next thing I need to do is pull over and reach for my wallet! There will be many opinions about this and it has probably been the subject of much forum bandwidth. Search "laser jammer" to read the views...

I agree with the Valentine detector which I have on my R1200RT on a BMR shelf set up. I am intrigued with the laser jammers for motorcycles on the market but I'm skeptical how effective they are. :bmw:

Mounted the Escort 9500ix to my 08RT 30,000 miles ago and it has paid for itself at least 50x over on the bike let alone in the car - Has worked Great for us especially like the GPS, false signal learning feature along with the nation wide red light/speed trap/laser detection features that are updated weekly by Escort!

Concur with the others on laser jamming devices performance - sound good just not that confident in their abilities.

One thing for sure is that towns, cities, counties and states across the country are desperate and writing speeding tickets is an easy way to generate income.

Always wanted one but illegal here in Canada and they can scan your bike and if found they will inpound your bike. Is it same in the U.S ? and if so how well can you hide it ?

Seems the Valentine and the Escort 9500IX are probably the best out there. Is the escort worth the extra dough?

I use an Escort Solo. Programmable, sensitivity to all bands including laser. I think however that once you get hit by laser its' "Hello officer!" The Escort solo has paid for itself several times over. It is wireless--no hard wire, it can run on simple batteries. I switch between RT and pick up truck easily. I also purchased a "Radar Screamer" from www. motorcycle radar.com. It is LOUD!! A 3 position toggle switch goes from high volume, to low, to muted. Well worth the cost. Motorcycle Radar sells ready to go packages. I mounted the detector, screamer, GPS, and controller for my heated gear on a "shelf" from RCU. Added benefit is the shelf shields the instruments from glare. Before I forget--you can manually trim signal sensitivity while underway, such as when in the city. It is not advertised as weatherproof but mine survived about 400 miles in the rain last summer.
Good luck in your search.

I have an Adaptiv TPX unit, and I think it's great. It has saved me several times the past year. Adaptiv recently announced a laser jammer to go along with it. They will be available in February, for about $550, I believe. I would order one, but they cannot be delivered here to TN. I'm looking now for out-of-state friends!

I am a long time Valentine1 user. Also mounted on a BMR shelf on my '09 Rt, but have also been using one in my cars for years.

Once you have the V1 arrows, and all the ways the V1 alerts you to location and signal strength, it would be extrememly difficult to go back to a detector without this valuable features.

Where no detector will help you is where no traffic exists in front of you. this is where you get caught with 'Instant-On" with no priro warning.

It is inadvisable ot speed in that situation.

If you have traafic in fornt of you, you will get plenty of warning for all bands including Laser as the trafiic in front of you is being shot! You get very good at interpreting what is radar.

But first and foremost knowing whether it is in front, behind or to your side and which signal is stringer and how many signals there are i s invaluable.

One additional handy feature is the "Boogy counter" .

How does this compare with others? The Escort seems pretty good with the traffic and speed camera features. Is it worth the extra cost? Laser seems to be the hardest to beat. That and Motorola.

NOBODY outruns the radio.

You can't beat LIDAR. The officer can put the crosshairs on you and hit the button, and that's the first your detector knows there a laser -- and only then if it's pointed the right direction (if he backshoots you, your detector will not get enough illumination to go off).

Your laser detector isn't a warning system, it's an acknowledgment system. ;)

Yeah, no one beats Motorola. Thing is, you'd think someone would have a laser detection system. I bet the military does.

A laser is just a light with a very narrow frequency and beam. There is very little "spill" for a detector to catch, so when the detector does go off, it's telling you that you have been painted and the LIDAR already has your speed.

You can play "I wonder if he has a laser detector" -- sit at the roadside with a laser rangefinder . . .one family got tired of the speeders on their residential block (a favorite detour around main street), so they started doing that. It brought the speed down for weeks, until people figured out that nobody was seeing COPS there and started ignoring the laser detectors . . .

. . .then the local motorcops had a field day there, writing an average of 45 speed citations per day per cop, none less than 15MPH over the limit (making it a misdemeanor, rather than an infraction).

Over 15 over is a misdemeanor? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? It's a tax for god's sake. What is the speedlimit in the zone?

Here in Iowa we have so many small town barney fife's poaching for the offering plate such that they grace two tickets a year if they are under 10 over. No one would have a license if they didn't.

My Zumo 665 alerts me to Red Light Cameras. I don';t believe we have Speed cameras here in the our area.

The beauty of the V1 is that it tells you how many radar signals there are and what direction it/they are coming from.

If there are single or multiple radar units in front of you and single or multiple radar units behind you you get the front and rear arrows lit, and the number of radar units detected in the display and the strongest of the signals arrow blinks. and the audio warning is for the stronger of the signals. As these detections change so does the dsiplays.

The V1 is upgradeable as technology improves.

Apparantly Photo radar is covered by the K or KA ban which the V1 does cover.

The cheapest thing on a BMW is the rider...and the 665 is a little too rich for my blood. The valentine isn't priced that badly though. I think I need a part time job just to pay for this stuff.

Well cheap is a relative term. The 665 provides me with XM Radio & Mp3 in Stereo wirelessly .

Additionally, it provides Nav/Weather /Traffic & Red light Camera alerts as well as being paired with my Blackberry Storm. This is all bluetoothed to my J& M Helmet Speakers and Mic wirelessly and allows my passenger to hear all I hear and for us to communicate also but she is hardwired to my helmet unit by plugging a cord into the back of the J&M head unit on my helmet.

the Zumo handles all of the above.so that my phone and my headset are both paired to the zumo 665 with priorty going to incoming phone calls.

If I am listening to music or Nav, and the phone rings, I am alerted on screen and can decide to take or reject the call (by touchscreen of course) If I accept the call the music or Nav is stopped, I talk into the mic in my helmet (not a boom) mounted in my full face Shoei RF-1100 in the lower chin area and obviously all is comin thru the in helmet speakers wirelessly.

whn the call is finished, the phone disconnects (but remains paired) and the msuic comes back on.

In addition the Zumo is waterproof and provides many other features. Back when there was a rebate I found it on the web with the XM40 antenna for $800.00. I have it mounted in the center of a BMR co-pilot shelf on a Black Locking Touratech adjustable mount.

Worth every penny so far IMHO!
