I thought i would utilize the wisdom of the forum to help us out. We bought an '02 K1200LT last week and the previous owner kept the helmets that had the speakers and mics installed. Im sure they would not have fit us but we might have been able to salvage the components. to the point:

1. Which modular helmets do you like and why?
2. Which speakers / mic setup would you purchase and why?
3. Can we add XM/ SIRIOUS radio?
4. Can the CB, GPS be played through the fairing mounted speakers?

BTW- the bike came with the BMW intercom system with 6 disc CD player, Midland CB, and Intercom which is corded. It also came with the BMW GPS with from what i can see the last available map upgrade ( V.8).

look at IMCmoto.com they offer a comm system that will install into any helmet and plug right into the bmw system plugs,,,,for under $100. I use them with FRS radios, and large groups, very happy with them.

I wear a symax2, my wife has the black dahlia helment and matching jacket. Both of our helments have the Sena SMH10 bluetooth system, the range is incredible, they synch with our smartphones, and the battery life will easily last a full day on the road. I can actually hook my cell to my Jensen radio on the bike I installed and it plays thru the bike speakers and my helment via bluetooth. Bought the headsets last year last day of Sturgis Rally for half price!

I love technology but it doesnt love me! I have a dumb question, with the BT helmet do you still sync your phone and such to it PLUS you are "wired" to the bike?

I didn't mean to lead you to thinking that this helmet has Bluetooth in it....it is just BT ready. I use the wired headset clamped on this helmet.

The cell phone would go through the wired system using the cell connection on the comm system.

New Shoei Neotec I have heard is excellent. I wear a fullface RF1100, I am a Shoei fan, 'cuz they fit me and very high quality. J&M Corp. Elite speakers and mic sound amazing!

I would suggest calling Sierra Electronics up in Troy, Ohio and get the updated scoop on the J&M systems. (800)338-6938 I'm not affiliated what-so-ever, but just a very satisfied customer. I had their systems on my '06 Kaw Nomad 1600, have it now on the '99 LT and also on the '02 GL1800. Good Stuff.

Tried the Sena blue tooth for about 5 days and that fumbling and worrying if your batteries are charging was a pain in the butt. Also only two of the 20-30 guys in the club that go on most rides had the Sena's. Sent them back for credit and went back to the plug in the cable and turn on the radio system. More volume and with the J&M CB/Weather/Radio inputs from the Jensen 2212 install, I have Radio, Sirius, Weather and Intercom with the wife to listen to. Also if I open up the Oddments box and plug in the 8GB USB stick I can listen to that music for what... about 3 weeks or so - :rotf:

I don't know how it could be any simpler or easier than that. I do know that my butt runs out long before the music does.

I can't say enough about the quality of sound of the J&M Elites. Great battery life too. Easy to operate and pair. Mine is paiedr to a Zumo 665 with Stereo Bluetooth and then my phone is also paired to the Zumo. You have the option of a hardwire to the passenger (to the driver's helmet) or Bluetooth intercom with passenger. Also, J&M 's software is upgradeable as new firmware is released.

I use the scala g4 rider ... way cool no wires and good sound, connets to my phone and gps as well as my co rider .. I cut a mouse pad up to fit the ear holes in my htc 3/4 and my htc modular ... this moves the speakers for the scala closer to the ears for better sound and insulates the road noise from the ears ... win win

As for xm, I have the lynx installed in the oddments box with a home dock ... this allows me to touch the mobile button and the lynx drops the home dock and picks up the scala ... click the lynx connect button and it plays via the bike radio ... as a side benefit, I have vehicle docks in my car and truck as well as another home dock in my house.

My Mod pics.
I bought some Panasonic over the ear headphones from a local store for about 40 bucks and took them apart. I had to shop quite awhile to find the best quality for the lowest money. I landed on the Panasonic RP-DJS400 DJ Street Headphones. After I had them apart I soldered off the wires and went about fitting them in the indents in my Shoei Quest. It took a while but it was worth it. After connecting the wires and verifying function I can tell you in all honesty. This was a VERY good idea!! What a huge difference in the sound quality and volume! My helmet sounds like a huge concert hall now!
If you are doing this to yours be sure to find speakers with the same resistance as the ones you are replacing or it may drain your battery on your headset and/or your MP3 player faster than you would like.

Note: the Sena sets use 32 ohm speakers

Like O2VRODTURBO - I gotta say I love my HJC IS Max - but I didn't get the available bluetooth kit - instead I got the Cardo Scala Rider G4 like fuzzywhitehe ... actually my buddy and I got a set... he uses one and I use the other... we can talk bike to bike really well. The Scala pairs bluetooth to my Droid - mostly for the phone and GPS - though I could play music through it too. I use the 1/8in mini TRS plug to connect to my IPOD Nano - so I can listen to the radio if I wanted to - but mostly just to the playlists on the IPOD. The HJC is a good fit, with little wind noise with the windshield all the way up. I can carry on a reasonably clear conversation via bluetooth with the Droid at 80+ mph - no distractions. Gotta say I love the Cruise on the Beemer. So if you see me riding down the road with both hands off the bars, I'm probably praising my God... so DON'T call me.

I am not a huge fan of bluetooth headsets because when I go touring I can ride 14 or more hours a day. Do not want to worry about charging them up and all that stuff. Once cable connecting me to the bike gives me CD, Radio, GPS, iPod, Radar, Phone, and Bike-to-Bike GMRS/FRS.

For sound quality, the best thing I ever did was get custom ear moulds for my Shure E4s. They give me great sound, custom fit, and block out wind and road noise. Since it goes right into my ear, the volume can be set lower, which is better for my long-term hearing. Despite it all, I can still hear a vehicle coming up behind or alongside me, so I do not feel totally isolated from the world. The Shure plugs right into the cable that connects my helmet to the bike.
