Hey all I have been looking at a 1999 Bmw K1200LT it has about 58k it looks to be in good shape the final drive has been rebuilt once and everything works...any suggestions on what to look at when i go there to purchase it??? I think the Price is fair at $5300....So any thoughts or advice is much appericated Thanks in advance

The only thing I can think of is: a better price..
A service history, if available would be good. Actually if everything on it does infact work, no signs of leaks and runs good. Take it for a ride, these babies are Heavy heavy bikes, if it feels good, runs good, buy it and you'll be good too.

Welcome to the forum, Paul. I'm thinking that the price is probably on the high side for a '99 with those miles and because of that it is a little more than I would want to pay, but if it doesn't bother you then go for it. When you test ride it be sure that the clutch is not slipping - that would be a pretty expensive repair if you have to add that onto any purchase price, high or low.

I hope I haven't confused you. My experience with 2 LT's is that they are the best motorcycles that I have ever owned, hands down. My wife would agree.

I think it depends on what kind of extras it has (that you actually want). If it's just a plain LT with no extras, $5,400 is on the high side.

On the other hand if it already has some things that you would like such as rear armrests, windshield upgrade (or better yet come with a few), peg extenders, j-pegs or ****-o-pegs, floorboards and so on then it might not be bad. Each one of those would be worth a couple hundred bucks to buy yourself - of course if you want any of them.

As far as what to look for: make sure the clutch isn't slipping, look for oil/fluids where they shouldn't be (owner has probably cleaned anything up), make sure that the ABS lights blink at startup and then turn off after a few feet of travel (you should hear an audible click below your butt after a few feet) and check the DOT code on the tires to make sure that they are not more than a few years old and that they have good tread left - at that price there is no reason why you should have to put new rubber under it. Also check all the gadgets and doodads to make sure they all work as you would with any vehicle purchase.

Otherwise I think the price is reasonable for a well maintained and responsibly ridden bike, if there are any signs to the contrary I would either whittle him way down or walk away.

You can find one at a better price.

Things to consider:
condition of tires--expensive to replace
when were the shocks last replaced--expensive putting new shocks in
have therubber brake lines been replaced with steel ones yet
when is the next service and which one?--replacing the fuel filter is time consuming as if the air filter.
Easy to visually inspect how much brake pad is left--extremely easy to replace brake pads
is the handle on the trunl broken--most have
look at the crash bracket protecting the trany--is it caked with oil? look at the intersection of the bell housing and engine for an oli leak
turn the radio on to hear if there is any distortion, or speakers not working

Don't worry if either tire hasn't worn evenly, ie has high and low spots on the outer edges--common--everything is OK

Ask what LT specific tools you will get with the bike; extra oil filters, air filter, duel filter, spark plugs, valve cover gasket. Crush rings for changing the trany fluid, O-rings for changing the oil filter. If they won't be riding any more, does their left over helmet fit you?

Hi there! just so happens, i'm on the serious side of selling my '02. I'm in Atanta area (Roswell). i just gave notice to the company and am retiring (@69 in March).

I am the 3rd owner-bought her in mid June. she's like mint with about 28k.for $7500.00. everything is perfect. there's one small invisible piece of the rear floorboard latch that's cracked but it in no way affects anything. new tires, 6 changer, CB, both wired and wireless comm with all cables, Champagne and Silver, custom windshild, fog lights, modified, heated seats (with padding), heated grips, 2 medium helmets-1=shoei cant think of the other, both wired.

The downside is that i won't have time to do anything until i return after leaving the job. the company is in TN and i'm leaving Wed to go up and get my things and pass the hammer.

if you're interested let me know here, and i'll try to put together a comprehensive list for you. i don't want to waste my time this week otherwise.

damn. stomach upset now that i've publicized my situation.

Paul, I have a '99 that I purchased two years ago. It was the plain Jane model without the trip computer and all the extra chrome. But it was/is in excellent shape with just a couple of scratches. Came with a Backup backrest, and Moto Lites installed and had relatively good tires on it. The odometer was at 18,924 miles and it was a one owner. He was careful with his bike and had just traded it for a newer BMW.

The dealer wanted me to give them an offer after I rode it and really to get them off my case I told them that they would have to replace the yellowed and crazed windshield with a new one. They said they could get me a ZTechnic which they carried. So...I offered them $4,200 out the door dollars if they put on a new windshield. They all got that really scary look on their faces but the manager called the owner and talked a bit and then said it was a deal. So I came out of that smelling like a rose.

The bike now has 57,3xx miles on it and has been a super great ride. I just don't ride the 2002 GL1800 anymore and have it for sale.

N-T You might consider my nice champagne 2002 GL1800. I'm in Valdosta, GA Bike is loaded with only 74k miles. Lots of Kury chrome and lights on bags and trunk and everything on front forks as far as lights. You really can be seen on this bike. Zumo 450 GPS and radar detector come with it.

Just a thought.
