Everyone,

I have noticed recently that I have a unwelcomed noise emanating from the motor that has me concerned. I have what sounds like a hammering or hydraulicing sound coming from the motor. I have noticed two distinct clues
1.) Gas diluted oil
2.) Metal shavings on the access door for the filter during the last two oil changes.

My concern is that I have a failed ring set but I haven't dug into it that far just yet. I'm planning to run a compression test this weekend and hope to borrow a bore scope to have a look inside prior to making the decision to perform major surgery. Does anyone know if ring failure is a common issue? I don't baby the big girl, but I don't mistreat her either. Any input is welcomed

Cheers,
Tom

Why don't you ask the dude in the commercial following your post. He seems to have all the answers. I hope your issue is easy and inexpensive to fix.

Ring failure is NOT a common issue... Is the metal soft like bearing or hard like cylinder wall.. Is is ferrous ( magnetic ) or non ferrous aluminum ? You didn't say if you also had metal on the drain plug magnet...

I would definitely start with the compression test and the borescope.. Can't hurt..If there is really something wrong, It should be obvious..:(

Does she seem to run on three cylinders ? Or does she run normally and justs bang ? The alternator drive can be pretty noisy on these things...Especially if you're running a bunch of extra electrical stuff..

About the only way I can think of to get your oil diluted with fuel is with a stuck injector...That might also give the noise you are hearing.. Then maybe a busted ring or cracked piston from hydraulic lock..But that's pretty extreme for an LT...And I would think at that point, The bike would not be rideable...As in NOT running well at all...

I had a computer failure that lead to an injector being continuously open...
On my Ford Focus... Not on the bike...

I'm assuming that one side of the injector will be hot all the time.. The computer fires the injector by switching the ground side of that electrical circuit...A shorted transistor in the computer will keep the injector grounded and cause fuel to flow continuously.. It could easily be the reverse of this, But most engines switch the ground..

You could troubleshoot this by putting a pressure gauge on the fuel rail....Key on, Fuel pump runs, Pressure comes up to the regulator's release point and should stay there.. If it falls off as soon as the fuel pump stops running, You've probably got an injector stuck, leaking,or constantly commanded to be on.

Then unplug the injectors one at a time to find the culprit..Measure the voltage at the injector terminals.. If you can read +12v across the injector connector that means the computer is shorted... If not, Then an injector could be stuck..

Of course a short to ground of that particular injectors ground wire would cause it too..

You'd have to unplug the connector at the computer to verify that..

You've got some troubleshooting to do...Get back to us..

Good Luck

John

I would pull the right side crankcase cover off & have a look. You can re-use the gasket. Make sure you have a inch pound torque wrench & use it to tighten the bolts.

Sorry guys. I was snivelling. Every thread I looked at in the forum last night had what looked like the Allstate spokesman dude had contributed to the thread with a post. It just looked like the commercial thing had sunk to a new low. I don't see the ads today.

Maybe it was just a trial run?

I saw two hyperlinks in the original post that popped up ads. And your post above has "forum" as a link that does the same! What's up with this? Has the forum begun to accept advertising?

I had a similar experience, the site has begun running ads since the new ownership took over. Not sure if those ads are for the benefit of the site owners, or are somehow injected into the data stream.

Regardless, I installed AdBlock and those ads went away. Versions available for IE, FireFox, Safari, Chrome. The banner ads still appear, and that is fine as they are not as annoying.

Well, you know, guys, it is a free forum - someone has to pay hosting bills.
I assume that not too many of us signed up for the BMWLT subscriptions , right?

Once I upgraded to Firefox 13 with AdBlockerPlus, all those annoying hyperlinked ads in the posts went away. It did annoy me that Internet Explorer gave me a pop up that it had blocked a pop up. On a side note, Mozilla Firefox seems to run much better under the Windows 8 Beta than either version of Internet Explorer.

Another side hijack :) You are the 1st person I've come across who is experimenting with Windows 8. You like or not?
