I have some before and after pictures here ...

You may remember me asking for all of your help along the way on paint color, fixes, opinions and the such. I stripped all the tupperware off and everything off all the plastics so the paint would look as good as possible (factory look). I appreciate all the input and help - this group is amazing! Thought you might to see some pictures.

Here is a running list of what I did along with some pictures ...
electric blue metallic paint, including front lowers
invisible mask on front lower
HID headlight
smoke front turn lenses (with white reflective tape on the inside dark area)
front turn signals now running lights as well
hard wire installed zumo 550 on custom made mount
lower driver pegs
passenger floorboards
shifter extension
saddlebag reflectors are now running lights & turn signals
heated corbin seats and backrerst
added rear trunk chrome piece
glossy black painted tip over wings and saddlebag strips
front caliper mounted motolights
relocated fuel filter to under passenger seat
changed fuel quick connects
grip puppies
added polished aluminum BMW roundel under windshield
color matched helmet

Quite a project, looks great.
Gotta love the color, looks pretty close to the factory shade of blue.

Great Job,

Did you bring the tupperware to a shop to be painted or did you do it yourself?

Do you know how the parts were prepared for paint?

Just curious since I may need to paint some of my saddlebags.

Thanks. I wasn't keeping track of hours ... but it went pretty smooth. This is my first BMW, so there was a little learning curve. Stripping the bike down (AND keeping track of everything) wasn't really that bad - just have to be systematic. That probably took me about 5-6 hours (including all the little pieces and stuck-on emblems)

Spent quite a bit of time sanding down all the plastics before primer & paint - knew that would be critical. Probably 6-7 hours there.

While the paint was drying I did the maintenance (oil change, air filter check, etc.) couple hours there.

The fuel filter relocation wasn't too bad, and I did the fuel quick connects at the same time. Those both took about 4 hours altogether.

The front turn signals to running lights took about 45 minutes (once I found a bulb housing that worked - universal with pressure prongs that bent to fit just fine).

The rear saddlebag reflector lights took about 3 hours - with most of that time spent carefully cutting out channels on the back of the reflectors to lay in the LED strips.

Driver peg lowering and passenger floorboards - about 1/2 hour.

HID was a breeze - maybe an hour (again, the plastics were already off)

Corbin seat was no extra time when reassembling. Reassembly of all the plastics and buttoning up was another 8-9 hours. I had drilled out all of the rivets on the hinges for the trunk and saddlebags so I could get the best paint job possible. I used sized stainless screws and nylock nuts in reassembly - finished off nice.

I may be forgetting something ... but that covers a lot of it. It really wasn't too bad, and if I got another LT that needed a facelift, I would not hesitate to do it again - and it would probably go smoother than this one!

Joe,

I had a friend shoot the color and clear at his shop.

I stripped everything off every part that I could - inside and out. I sanded all of the clear off the original color, then did some touch up on some minor nicks here and there. They were then primered and wet sanded before the color went down, and then clear.

PS, you never mentioned in your original post that your bike was originally Impala Brown! I once had a 1976 Plymouth Valiant 4 dr painted that color. The PV was rock solid reliable but an embarrassment to drive!

The photos don't show the Motolights right? Or am I missing something.
"Relocated Fuel Filter to under passenger seat." How did you do this? Was there a write up somewhere on the forum, or are you trailblazing? Inquiring minds..

Good catch Glenn! I couldn't figure out why the new paint job looked so ..........blue! Uppers and lowers painted the same color was the difference. I think I kinda prefer the contrasting color, not necessarily the factory silver, but something to offset the acres of upper fairing, sting ray, side bags, trunk, etc base colors.

Still a beautiful job any way you look at it.

Yes, the pics were before the motolights. If the weather is good tomorrow (in question here) I will take more pics and post them, including the polished roundel.

As far as the fuel filter goes ... when I went to change it (maintenance) and realized it was IN the tank (isn't it bad enought the pump is in there?) I figured that had to be modified. I can't imagine taking it all down that far just to change the fuel filter - especially if it goes bad while on the road ... when else would it go bad?

Anyways ... poked around online a little bit and here is what I did ... since the bike was already apart for the paint, I'll pick it up from where I got into the tank:
Removed the pump/filter assembly from the tank
Removed filter and line, and replaced with fuel line only
Put pump assembly back into the tank
Spliced into the send line from the tank (at the quick connects)
Ran fuel line from feed spliced end to under the passenger seat
Installed fuel filter and ran fuel line back to the open spliced end into the engine
Put some foam insulation around the filter just to protect it a little bit

It fits nicely in a little pocket on the right/brake side of the area under the passenger seat
The fuel lines run cleanly along the right/brake side of the bike behind the bodywork (where the brake lines go, basically)

Now changing the fuel filter should take about 10 minutes instead of hours on end! :)

Hey Steve, I see you have your inspection sticker on a plate on the front fork. I had one on my bike and the inspector told me that he couldn't put the sticker on it because they were illegal in NY. You didn't have any problem?

Ray,

I had no problems, got my inspection at the Beemer Barn (great place by the way - highly recommend John and the guys). Where was your inspector? I have seen planty of them around on other bikes; didn't know about them not being legal.

Great looking make over. Really nice color change.

In PA a inspection sticker must be affixed to a part of the bike that can not be removed easily. A fork or body part. I plate unless welded or somehow permanently attached is the only place they will put it. The reason is they say people would just switch it around on other bikes they own or easy theft.

Great full color paint, maybe a pin strip would break the upper lower, but I like it as is.
