Hi all,

last month I had the 12k service done at the local BMW dealer, all went ok and they also fixed a problem with one of the plug wires, now the bikes runs smoother and cleaner.

But...

Since then, I saw a small oil stain under the engine on the garage floor. I have a fixed position for the bike (between the two cars) so it's definitely the bike to cause the stain, nothing else. I left the bike stopped there for the past two weeks, after using it for three weeks every day right after the service... not sure when the stain developped but I assume it's in the last two weeks or I would have noticed it before.

For sure the stain was not there before the service...

They changed the oil and the also the gasket, is it normal to have a small leakage or should I return the bike to the dealer?

I suppose it could be a few things. Perhaps the tech didn't clean up under the engine after the oil change and it's just residual oil dripping. Perhaps the "o" ring for the filter cover is compromised and allowing oil to seep past. Perhaps the valve cover gasket didn't get sealed properly or one or more of the cover bolts are loose allowing oil to get out. You could clean the bike and the floor and see if it continues to oil spot.

Long answer short- take it back to the dealer. There should be no oil leaks.

Although it had never happened to me before, after my last oil change, I had a small oil leak from the drain bolt. Called the dealer and he said that every so often the metal crush washer on the drain bolt doesn't conform properly when installed and these leaks occur. He sent me a free quart of BMW oil and a new washer. Problem solved.

I agree with you, it shouldn't leak at all. I'll clean the area and keep an eye on it for the next week, if it's not gone I'll take it back. I hate losing time for stupid things like that, I'll lose minimum 2-3 hours because of the trip and the waiting :-(

Update for the ones interested: I checked under the bike every morning in the past week, after having used the bike on the previous day, and I found no new stain.

Problem fixed? Let's hope... although I'm curious to know what was it.

It seems strange to me, that a dealer leaves "dirty" somewhere after chaging the oil, so much that oil can spill on the floor
