How much oil do people add when doing a oil change with filter.
I believe the manual states 3.96 qts with filter.
I found adding 3 quarts brings it up to the middle of the bull’s-eyes.
Running the engine to get warm and recheck and it is still full add about 1/4 qt more and a tad over.
This is what I did:
- Warm engine -Drained oil (level surface) out of plug and remove filter cover.
- Oil drained for 15 mins before re-installing filter and plugs
- The amount of oil recovered was about just shy of 2.75qt.

I can not believe there is qt of oil left in the engine?
Any opinions would be appreciated.

PS how dangerous is it to overfill this engine?

Jim, your engine may have been low in oil before the change. Also there was some oil left in the filter you removed. That may account for the 2.75 quarts you recovered.

Best practice is to fill up the new filter with oil before installing, then add oil as needed. I found that filling up with 3.75 quarts was perfect for my 3 LTs.
Pouring the rest of the 4th quart in and you overfill. Yes overfilling is a bad thing as you build back pressure in the crankcase.
One big demerit on the glass eye BMW installed on the LT. These get dirty and hard to read, not to mention the fact that you need a flashlight and must take several yoga lessons beforehand. I do miss the ole oil dipstick found on my ole Jap bikes...

A full 4 qts won't harm anything as the spinning bits are far above the oil level when the engine is running. The real danger of an over fill was the interaction of the spinning crank on the surface of the oil and causing foaming, but that is NOT an issue with this engine. If you look at the sight guage with the bike on the center stand and the engine running there will be NO oil visible. Shut her down and watch the sump re-fill.

I always put 6+ quarts of oil in my Lincoln but only dispose of just under 5 qts. Still don't know where that other quart goes:p .

I gave up on seeing the level. When I change I dump 4 quarts in & as long as I don't see oil under the bike it's good till the next change.

I like 3 and a quart or so of Lucas synthetic stabilizer.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't see a darn thing in that sight glass.

My old Yamaha Majesty had a dipstick that was made out of black plastic, (You ever try seeing oil on a black plastic dipstick?) and I thought that was dumb, but at least it was a dipstick.

Not having a use for the extra few tablespoons I throw the whole fourth quart in. After a nice long ride with the filter then saturated and bike warm {the way they want you to take your reading} the oil registers slightly high on the dreaded glass. It should go down soon enough.
