Hello,

My name is Tom, and I have an addiction.

Got back into riding in the Spring of last year after a 10 year hiatus (after "the accident"). Never had a BMW before, but ended up with an '00 RT-P. Loved it, still love it, and still use it for a daily commuter - A task which it handles incredibly well.

But I needed something for 2-up with the SO. Small tours at first, then hopefully longer. Found a local R1200C with nice bags, a Corbin dual-seat with passenger backrest, and at a great price. Had ridden a couple, and it seemed like a nice bike. But I kept it for only a month as I guess I just turned out not to be the cruiser type.

Made the mistake of test riding a used 2003 K1200GT at the local dealer. Couldn't believe the power (both of engine and brakes) and smoothness, and with a Pirate's Lair passenger backrest it would be an even better 2-up tourer than the R12C. So when I had to take my RT-P in for service and they didn't have any loaner bikes available... well I welcomed the K12GT into my stable.

Then I saw a BMW which I had lusted over for several years, on sale locally and at a very reasonable price. So last Fall I added the 2002 R1150GS-Adventure to the household. Someday soon she and I will ride the ALCAN highway, and also perhaps adventure into Northern Mexico and beyond...

So things were pretty stable at home. 3 beautiful BMW bikes, all with their own specific purposes and benefits. I took my longest ride when I took the K-GT down to visit my folks at Christmas. 760 miles round trip in 3 days - Not much by most standards but my longest yet on a bike. The K-GT sucked up those highway miles with ease, but even with the modifications I made to it (barbacks, etc.), I just never got totally comfortable on it. Perhaps because of the ergos, I never felt that I was totally in control of it, as opposed to the other way around.

Now I am pretty big at 6'4" and 250#, and I have no trouble flicking the RT-P when I need to. But the K-GT, perhaps because of its longer wheelbase or ?, just never responded as quickly as I would have liked. I'm really a pleasure rider who does like to stop and smell the roses, and I guess that I was just not "sporty" enough for the K-GT. So when I saw a couple of R-RT's available used at a local dealer, I decided I would check them out with the idea of maybe trading in the K-GT.

The '04 1150 RT they had was nice, but I actually didn't like it as much as the '00 R1100 RT they also had. I guess that I am used to my 1100 as I ride it every day. But neither or them really "wowed" me.

Then I made the mistake of asking whether they had any LT's which were not too dear. Well they had one with a motivated seller, who was also about my height, so he thought that it might be pretty well set up for me. I rode it, and loved it. How can a bike this big and heavy seem to handle better than the smaller, lighter K-GT? Whatever BMW engineers did with the K-LT, they did it right! We discussed the differential between trading in my K-GT for the LT and they came close enough for me to take it home that day. WOW!

Anyway, I took a bath on the K-GT between the purchase and trade-in price, but I like clean transactions and not having to worry about consigning the bike, etc. And I have not looked back. The new LT is a 2002 with only 26k on the clock. And it was decked out nicely (looks like all dealer installed) with options such as an Autocom Pro 7 sport, PIAA 510's with autoswitch, rack with aux brakelight on the top case, bag liners, Rick Mayer leather heated front and rear saddles, driver backrest, accessory shelf with mounted Garmin 176C GPS, and BMW cupholder! I have already removed the CD changer for more room in the sidecase, and have hooked up my XM Roady 2 for tunes.

So here I am at a new forum, a very happy person with my (new to me) K1200LT. Here is a pic - same one as my avatar, but a little larger. I'm looking forward to many new discussions at this Board, and many happy miles on my new ride!

Welcome aboard! I'm rather new myself after picking up my 2000 a few months ago and being Winter not riding much.

You do know that you can actually test ride the bikes without buying them, well at least here in NY you can :D Just kidding, but it sounds like you found your little slice of heaven now and I'm sure you and the wife will love it.

She sure is decked out nice. Wish I had all those farkles, of course then what would I wish for.......

Don't let him kid you, Tom, it's a great color and it looks sweet overall.
Not sure from the shadows on the photo, but is it dark graphite or black?

Also (sorry for the mini-hijack), what's the windshield?

Welcome from another Newbie. How did you connect the Roady; do you use the FM modulator? ;)

Welcome Tom! You are gonna love it! I see you have an Aeroflow windshield on her. It may not be the sleekest looking windscreen, but it does produce a very nice large envelope of non turbulence for not only the rider, but the very important passenger as well!

If you think that you like it now, wait until you've put a few thousand miles on it. This is a love affair that just keeps on growing. It will spoil you for ANY other touring bike (IMHO).

Hey All,

Thanks for the warm welcome. And now to answer the questions:

Windshield is an Aeroflow as John correctly surmised. Color is Black, I am pretty sure (it is not metallic, so I am assuming it is not "dark graphite"). Regarding the Roady, I am actually getting a great signal right now using the FM modulator, even without the bike's antenna installed (removed to cover it). However I understand that quality of sound from the Roady is in this order (from highest to lowest): 1) Plug into stereo or amp, 2) Using the casette adapter and 3) Using the RF modulator. That coupled with the fact that my selected frequency may have activity in areas where I travel, I will be transferring over to using the cassette adapter. I ran power into the small front "stashbox" where the cassette is located, and that is where I am keeping the Roady, so it will be easy to use the cassette adapter. Only thing I am a little worried about is that the Roady unit seems to get kind of warm in use, so I may eventually bring it out of the closet, and up into the cooling breezes.

Welcome Tom, as others have said if you like it now just wait. I've test ridden a few bikes and I've sat on allot.......so far nothing even comes close to fitting me better then the Lt.

You may want to consider snapping a plastic tent grommet (attached pic of product) on your bike cover in the estimate area where the antenna pole would be so you won't have to keep taking it off. I got this at the camping department at Wally's. I installed two on my cover for both the radio & cb antennas.

Welcome to the farm, you are in for a treat, this group of folks are the best. We will help in any way possible. Questions, I know someone here has an answer, problems, someone here can help. even when you are on the road and have problems someone will assist. Even questions not about your ride!

I purchased "The Beerburner" last Feb and have not looked back, with 20K miles this past year. Have made some great friends here. I would encourage you to attend as many functions as you can. Spring Training CampII is coming up, CCR is also, RTE's in your area, and those far away. HDDC are around also. Dont miss any Tech Sessions near or far, you will learn more at one of these than you will believe and meet some great folks.

This site is the best tool in yor tool bag, use it, often!

NO they did not pay me to say all that either.

Welcome. I can not believe how great these people are. I too am a newbie. Bought my 05 this past Sept. Came here and have not looked back. Met some great people over the fall while doing some group rides. Can't wait for the spring.

That's a very nice looking bike you have there.
I was interested to read your comments re KLT vs. GT. I feel the same way; wife and I spent a couple weeks in the alps on at rented GT and it just never seemed quite right. I rode it solo for several miles too and I just never became "one with the bike". I dunno, but your comments about the KLT somehow doing it better fit for me too.
So, welcome and many happy miles on the LT. I will say the LT does just seem to keep on getting better with the miles.
